LIG Defense & Aerospace and Rheinmetall Collaborate for NATO Defense Solutions in Europe

Strategic Collaboration between LIG Defense & Aerospace and Rheinmetall

In a significant move for the defense technology sector, LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) from South Korea has announced a strategic partnership with Rheinmetall, a prominent technology group based in Düsseldorf, Germany. This collaboration aims to bolster the development and deployment of advanced air defense systems tailored for the needs of NATO countries and other European nations. The agreement was officially signed during the Eurosatory defense exhibition held in France, highlighting the urgency of enhancing collaborative defense capabilities in the face of contemporary global challenges.

Objectives and Joint Venture Formation

The initial goal of this partnership is to establish a joint venture where Rheinmetall will hold a majority stake. This venture will focus on the integration and marketing of mid-range and long-range air defense missile systems developed by LIG D&A, alongside Rheinmetall's very short-range air defense (VSHORAD) systems. By aligning their respective strengths, both companies aim to fill existing gaps in short-range air defense (SHORAD) capabilities to provide comprehensive solutions across multiple levels of air defense.

Responding to Market Demands

As global conflicts — particularly those witnessed in Ukraine and the Middle East — emphasize the necessity for fast and reliable supply chains, this partnership will leverage the extensive technological expertise and resources of both firms. Oliver Dürr, the CEO of Rheinmetall Division Air Defence, noted that the complementary nature of both companies’ ground-based air defense systems is designed to meet current market demands while preparing for future challenges. This approach not only enhances product portfolios but also paves the way for delivering integrated solutions from a single source.

Developing New Technologies

In addition to marketing existing technologies, the partnership will focus on the collaborative development of new missile systems that address the emerging needs in the air defense landscape. The capability to deploy versatile and efficient missile systems is critical, as defense strategies evolve in response to an unpredictable global environment. Through this alliance, LIG D&A and Rheinmetall aspire to contribute significantly to the defense ecosystem of Europe.

Long-Term Strategic Goals

Ickhyun Shin, the President and CEO of LIG D&A, emphasized the importance of this partnership, describing it as a step toward establishing a robust center of expertise in air defense missile systems within Europe. With a shared vision of strengthening the integrated air and missile defense capabilities across the region, both companies are committed to providing competitive and interoperable solutions that align with European defense priorities. The goal is not just immediate collaboration but building a lasting strategic partnership that actively contributes to the security landscape of NATO member states.
