Elkem Introduces Innovative Recycled Silicone Products for Labeling Applications

Elkem ASA, a global leader in advanced silicon materials, has recently unveiled two pioneering products in its SILCOLEASE® line intended for release liners. This launch signifies Elkem's steadfast commitment to promoting sustainability and circularity in industrial processes. The new offerings, SILCOLEASE® RE POLY 11362 and SILCOLEASE® RE POLY 368, are fully solvent-free and consist of 100% recycled silicone materials.

Agnès Jolly, the head of silicone fluids research and technology at Elkem, emphasized the innovative nature of these products. She stated, "They represent the future of release coating technology, providing anti-adhesive properties that our clients anticipate to facilitate the easy removal of adhesive materials. Extensive testing has been conducted to ensure a seamless integration into existing production processes."

Elkem's new silicone products were developed utilizing an advanced chemical recycling unit located in Saint-Fons, France. This state-of-the-art facility is the first of its kind in the commercial domain, focusing on transforming post-consumer silicone waste into valuable raw materials. With the launch of these products, Elkem is setting a new standard in the production of sustainable coating solutions.

Earlier this year, Elkem embarked on a collaborative project with Kroenert GmbH & Co KG, a prominent manufacturer of coating machinery based in Hamburg, Germany. The two companies conducted tests to validate the performance of Elkem's recycled silicone. Ralf Thiel, a process technology engineer at Kroenert, reported, "The recycled products exhibited similar processing capabilities as virgin products, even at high processing speeds. These consistently positive outcomes suggest an optimal and sustainable utilization of recycled silicone."

Indeed, the new recycled silicones show a remarkable carbon footprint reduction, boasting a 70% lower impact compared to their non-recycled counterparts. This aligns with the rising demand in the market for sustainable solutions and prepares manufacturers for future regulatory requirements.

To educate stakeholders and clients on these innovations, Elkem has scheduled a webinar for May 15. During this event, three experts from the company — Clément Des Courieres, Head of Sustainable Business Development; Carine Dupuit, Market Manager; and Sébastien Marrot, Product Manager — will present the specific results of this innovation. They will discuss how the new products align with Elkem's sustainability strategy and their potential contribution towards the sustainability goals of Elkem's clients.

Elkem is recognized as a major global supplier of advanced silicon-based materials, working to create a better and more sustainable future.
