Xizang Celebrates 75 Years of Transformation: A Journey of Culture and Development
Celebrating 75 Years of Transformation in Xizang
This year marks a significant milestone for Xizang, as it celebrates the 75th anniversary of its peaceful liberation. The changes made over this period have transformed Xizang from a prior state of marginalization to a region characterized by development and rich culture. Liang Junyan, a seasoned researcher at the China Tibetology Research Center, has been studying Xizang’s history and culture for over two decades, providing insight into the remarkable evolution that has taken place.
A Journey Through Time
When Liang first visited Xizang in the summer of 2007, she encountered a challenging journey from the airport to the city. The roads were rough, houses appeared dilapidated, and the overall landscape was marked by poverty and hardship. Fast forward to today, the transformation is nothing short of astonishing. With a staggering rise in GDP from 327 million Yuan (approximately $47.87 million) in 1965 to a compelling 303.2 billion Yuan ($44.39 billion) in 2025, Xizang has eradicated absolute poverty and boasts an improving average life expectancy of 72.5 years.
Investment in education has also played a crucial role; it was one of the first regions in China to implement publicly funded 15-year education programs. The infrastructural improvements are equally striking. The region now boasts over 120,000 kilometers of roads, enabling quick access between major economic hubs through a network designed for efficiency. The rapid transit system allows residents to travel between key economic centers in a mere three hours.
Cultural Preservation: Beyond Just Protecting the Past
Alongside economic expansion, efforts to preserve Xizang’s rich heritage are ongoing and systematic. Traditional arts, such as the epic tales of King Gesar and the Tibetan opera, have received recognition by UNESCO, being included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Between 2012 and 2024, the central and regional governments allocated a hefty 473 million Yuan ($69.25 million) towards preserving this cultural wealth.
Schools now offer instruction in both Chinese and Tibetan, with Tibetan language media flourishing across various platforms. This dual-language initiative is vital for maintaining the vibrancy of the Tibetan culture amidst rapid modernization.
The Interplay of Development and Cultural Preservation
There is a common belief that the allure of Xizang lies in its “pre-modern” charm—pure, pious, and distanced from industrialization. However, this perspective overlooks a crucial reality: cultural preservation cannot thrive in a vacuum devoid of material security. One older Thangka painter recounted that securing apprenticeships is not merely about talent but the immediate financial needs of nomadic families prioritizing income over long-term training. Thus, improvements in infrastructure, public services, and household incomes are fundamental for sustainable cultural preservation.
Nevertheless, economic growth alone does not guarantee cultural vibrancy. Sustainable government financing, as seen in the funds allocated for intangible cultural heritage, is essential. Modern educational facilities and the widespread connections established through improved roads foster both economic and cultural advancements.
A New Era for Xizang
Liang’s observations culminate in the realization that contemporary Xizang embodies a new developmental epoch, propelled by a cohesive governance strategy that honors the vision of a unified Chinese community. This strategy sees infrastructure projects and cultural documentation efforts harmoniously intertwined with environmental preservation initiatives. Economic growth lays a solid foundation for cultural conservation, which, in turn, binds the community together.
Thus, what we observe in Xizang is not merely progress in terms of material wealth, but a holistic advancement that blends development and culture, a true ‘miracle on Earth’. This momentous journey showcases how, against the backdrop of history and tradition, Xizang continues to evolve and adapt while holding steadfast to its unique cultural identity.
