Allison Transmission Launches CNG-Compatible 3000 Series for Mack Granite
Indianapolis, May 20, 2025 – Allison Transmission, a global leader in commercial vehicle transmission solutions, has proudly announced the release of its 3000 Series™ automatic transmission for the CNG-powered Mack Granite® trucks. This development aims to enhance efficiency for waste management applications while promoting sustainability. The 3000 Series™ is a vital addition following the positive reception of the Allison 4500 Rugged Duty Series™ in conjunction with Mack Granite CNG launched in 2023.
The 3000 Series™ is specifically engineered to improve fuel economy and ease of operation in medium and heavy-duty vehicles. According to Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America, this enhanced powertrain option provides greater flexibility for customers to tailor their vehicles to suit lighter-duty waste applications. He explained, "By pairing the Allison 3000 with the L9N engine, we offer a solution that minimizes acquisition costs while delivering reliability and performance that Mack customers expect, especially for light-duty roll-off tasks where the higher GVWR is unnecessary."
Allison transmissions are designed to work seamlessly with various fuel types, including traditional diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), and other alternative fuels. Vehicles equipped with Allison's automatic transmissions achieve impeccable performance and reduced emissions and engine noise, creating a better overall experience for drivers and the public alike.
Rohan Barua, Vice President of North America Sales at Allison Transmission, highlighted the benefits of combining their automatic transmissions with natural gas engines: "Using our torque converter ensures optimal performance and fuel efficiency. Unlike manual transmissions and automated manual transmissions (AMTs), our automatics maintain smooth, full-power shifts. This efficiency allows vehicles to travel further in a shorter amount of time, helping refuse fleets meet their sustainability objectives without compromising productivity."
The CNG-powered Mack Granite, when paired with the 3000 Series™, is designed to enhance fleet productivity while lowering fuel consumption and emissions. The range of applications includes distribution, refuse collection, utility work, and emergency services, among others. With a power range from 210 to 450 horsepower (157-336 kW) and torque capabilities of up to 1,250 lb-ft (1,695 N•m), the 3000 Series™ is built to meet diverse operational demands.
