Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho Sets New Sustainability Benchmark
Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho has recently accomplished a significant milestone by securing the internationally recognized Green Key certification, marking it as the first Moxy brand hotel in Japan to achieve this prestigious eco-label. Located in Sumida City, Tokyo, the hotel under the stewardship of General Manager Keiko Takada aims to emphasize environmental responsibility and sustainable operations in the hospitality sector.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Green Key is a global eco-certification program designed to recognize and promote sustainable tourism efforts among hotels and other facilities. It comprises 13 categories, featuring a total of 150 criteria—75 compulsory and 75 voluntary. This certification reflects compliance with rigorous standards established by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). To qualify, Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho not only needed to meet these extensive criteria but also must undergo regular re-evaluations to maintain its certification, ensuring ongoing improvement and commitment to sustainability.
Currently, over 8,000 facilities in more than 90 countries are certified under the Green Key program, highlighting their dedication to responsible environmental practices.
Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho sees this certification as a stepping stone towards enhancing its engagement in environmental conservation. The hotel aims to create a sustainable society where both local residents and international visitors can enjoy a comfortable stay while supporting environmentally friendly initiatives.
Key Sustainable Actions at Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho
Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho has taken various sustainable actions in pursuit of the Green Key certification, focusing on several operational areas:
1. Establishment of a Sustainability Committee
In December 2023, the hotel launched a Sustainability Committee aimed at overseeing the hotel-wide efforts towards achieving the Green Key certification. By fostering teamwork across different departments, the hotel efficiently worked to enhance energy efficiency, reduce water usage, and minimize waste generation.
Training sessions for employees on sustainability and climate change have been conducted to increase their awareness and understanding of these critical issues. The hotel has also actively participated in community activities, including local clean-up operations and volunteer efforts, fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.
2. Local Produce and Reduced Food Waste
Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho takes pride in offering dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. An example of this initiative is the “Edo-nasu Smoothie,” which features eggplants grown within the Sumida area. Additionally, the hotel prioritizes procuring items from local suppliers, thereby minimizing emissions related to transportation and rediscovering local food culture.
3. Reduction of Plastic Through Alternatives
The hotel has begun replacing disposable amenities with eco-friendly options, such as bamboo toothbrushes and hair combs, as well as introducing more than eight different paper-packaged amenities to minimize single-use plastics.
4. Efficiency in Water Usage
The installation of water-saving valves on showerheads and faucets has significantly reduced water consumption. Starting from June 2025, Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho will phase out bottled water in rooms, replacing them with newly installed water dispensers.
Commitment to Diversity and the Environment
Moreover, Marriott International, the parent company of Moxy Hotels, is striving to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its operations by 2050. Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho is also focusing on energy management, regularly monitoring and analyzing monthly energy usage, implementing LED and sensor lighting, and meticulously controlling the indoor climate to reduce both hot and cold water usage.
The housekeeping department employs environmentally friendly cleaning products that meet global standards, contributing to lower environmental impact. The hotel encourages guests to opt for carbon-reducing choices, such as utilizing shared bicycles and public transport.
Understanding Green Key Certification
The Green Key program, managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), is globally recognized as a voluntary eco-certification initiative. With over 8,000 certified facilities in more than 90 countries, the program establishes excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operations within the tourism and hospitality industry.
