Okayama University's OI-Start Platform Advances Innovative Collaboration Through National Conference
On March 12, 2026, a significant gathering took place at the 10th National Development Promotion Conference of Matching HUB. Hosted by the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), this conference served as a platform for innovation in regional collaboration. The Coordinator for Industry-Academia-Government collaboration at Okayama University, Hiroshi Kono, presented a report entitled, "Okayama's Open Innovation Cultivating Co-creation: OI-Start's Approach to Community Building, Project Development, and Cooperative Research."
In his presentation, Kono emphasized a strategy that goes beyond simple technology transfer. Instead, he advocated for creating diverse "spaces" where various stakeholders can gather, which would lead seamlessly into concrete project development and practical joint research. His talk focused on how these initiatives can generate new value in local communities.
The conference commenced with an opening address from Minoru Terano, the President of JAIST, who set a collaborative tone for the discussions ahead. Attendees included representatives from several other prestigious institutions such as Chiba University, Kumamoto University, and Oita University, alongside local government officials from Gunma and Nagano prefectures.
Throughout the event, 15 engaging presentations were shared, covering various aspects of innovation through industry-academia-government partnerships. Each report highlighted unique regional characteristics and approaches to problem-solving that resonated with the audience. The energy in the room was palpable, as participants exchanged vibrant ideas and engaged in discussions that transcended regional and organizational boundaries.
The conference proved to be an enriching opportunity to expand collaborative networks, with a focus on harnessing the collective strengths of participating entities. Kono mentioned that the insights gained from this conference would serve to accelerate the OI-Start efforts in promoting open innovation rooted in Okayama.
