ROHM Unveils the AW2K21: A Game-Changer in Fast Charging Technology



ROHM Co., Ltd. has recently announced the launch of their latest innovation, the AW2K21—a 30V N-channel MOSFET designed to meet the high demands for fast-charging applications in compact devices. This ultra-compact MOSFET comes in a common-source configuration and boasts an impressive ON-resistance of just 2.0 milliohms (typical), setting a new industry standard.

Addressing Industry Challenges


In a world where fast charging is becoming increasingly essential, particularly in smartphones, tablets, wearable devices, and other compact electronics, the AW2K21 is a significant advancement. Traditional solutions often require two large MOSFETs to meet strict specifications, such as a current rating of 20A and a breakdown voltage of 28-30V, with ON-resistance no greater than 5 milliohms. This has historically led to increased board space usage and added design complexity. However, ROHM's latest offering integrates two MOSFETs into a single compact package, facilitating bidirectional protection while reducing the overall footprint and power loss.

The unique structure of the AW2K21 enhances cell density, positioning the drain terminal on the top surface instead of employing the conventional vertical trench MOSFETs. This innovation allows for an increased chip-to-package area ratio, resulting in a minimized ON-resistance per unit area. Compared to standard 3.3mm x 3.3mm MOSFETs, the AW2K21 offers a remarkable reduction in footprint and ON-resistance—approximately 81% and 33% lower, respectively. Furthermore, it surpasses similarly sized GaN HEMTs with up to 50% lower ON-resistance, significantly improving efficiency in power supply and charging circuits.

The AW2K21 is not only perfect for power supply systems and charging circuits; it also excels as a unidirectional protection MOSFET for load switch applications.
