Consumers Energy's Tree-Clearing Efforts
In a significant bid to bolster Michigan's electrical grid, Consumers Energy is undertaking a tree clearing initiative along more than 8,000 miles of power lines this year, marking an increase of 1,000 miles compared to previous efforts in 2024. This strategic operation is part of their broader Reliability Roadmap, which aims to secure electrical infrastructure and minimize power outages for both residential and business customers across the state.
Trees and branches, which have been identified as the leading cause of power interruptions, contribute to about 40% of outages. By proactively trimming and removing hazardous vegetation, Consumers Energy aims to mitigate potential disruptions, thereby fostering a more resilient energy network for communities throughout Michigan.
Chris Laird, Vice President of Electric Operations at Consumers Energy, emphasized the effectiveness of this measure, stating, "Line clearing is one of the most effective ways we can improve reliability for our customers." He highlighted the unpredictable weather conditions in Michigan, suggesting that by maintaining clear power lines, the company is taking vital steps to reduce outage risks, ensuring a reliable power supply.
To implement this tree-clearing program, Consumers Energy collaborates with certified arborists, focusing on both high- and low-voltage power lines. Their priority is to address areas particularly prone to outages caused by tree-related issues while promoting responsible environmental management and engaging with local communities throughout the process.
Sara Stewart, a certified arborist and Senior Manager of Forestry at Consumers Energy, explained the dual benefits of their vegetation management efforts: "As an arborist, I understand the importance of balancing tree health with safety and reliability. Line clearing and responsible vegetation management not only help prevent power outages but also promotes healthier, more resilient trees in our communities. It's a win-win—we're keeping the lights on while ensuring trees continue to leave a lasting impact."
Since enhancing their line clearing program in recent years, Consumers Energy has reported notable improvements in service reliability. Areas that have undergone tree clearing experience fewer outages of shorter duration. This line clearing initiative is complemented by ongoing upgrades in equipment, strategy, and technology under the Reliability Roadmap umbrella, which is proving effective. According to recent data, the average customer reported experiencing 21 fewer minutes of power outages compared to the previous year, with more than 93% of customers having their power restored in less than 24 hours after an outage.
Chris Laird reaffirmed the importance of being proactive, noting, "By staying proactive, we're reducing outages, improving response times, and making sure our customers experience fewer and shorter disruptions." He reiterated that Consumers Energy crews are actively working year-round—whether in summer heat or winter freezes—to ensure that trees and power lines coexist safely. This dedicated effort ultimately translates to a safer, more dependable energy framework for Michigan residents.
