Shanghai Electric Launches China's First Humanoid Robot Training Center
On March 11, 2025, Shanghai Electric, one of China's leading energy and technology firms, announced the inauguration of the Kylin Humanoid Robot Training Center in Shanghai. This groundbreaking facility is the first of its kind in China, designed specifically to support the training and development of humanoid robots across various industrial applications.
The Kylin Training Center represents a collaborative effort, involving Shanghai Electric and nine other prominent research enterprises. Their goal is ambitious: to train up to 1,000 heterogeneous humanoid robots by 2027. Currently, the center operates with the capacity to host more than 100 robots, making it the largest humanoid robot training facility in the country.
The center’s opening marks a significant advancement in the evolution of humanoid robotics in China. By integrating interdisciplinary expertise, the initiative aims to enhance the industrial applications of humanoid robots in sectors such as equipment manufacturing, automotive production, and home appliances. This innovative facility not only serves as a training ground but also a data aggregation hub, where robots will learn from real-world industrial scenarios.
From March 2024, Shanghai Electric's Central Research Institute will partner closely with the Kylin Training Center to explore applicable scenarios for humanoid robots, particularly in extreme operational environments within the nuclear energy sector. The overarching aim of this initiative is to gradually take over labor-intensive, high-risk tasks traditionally performed by humans, thereby increasing efficiency and safety in nuclear power manufacturing, and pushing the sector towards smarter innovation.
Notably, on December 1, 2024, both Shanghai Electric and the Kylin Training Center achieved a landmark milestone with the successful deployment of the first humanoid robot specifically tailored for routine operations in the nuclear industry. This robot stands out due to its unique design characteristics that focus on force configuration and control, alongside its capabilities in data collection and a wide range of training functionalities.
The tasks assigned to these humanoid robots include inspections and loading/unloading operations in industrial environments, thus illustrating their versatility and potential applications. As a result of the collaboration between Shanghai Electric and the Kylin Training Center, the integration of humanoid robots into the nuclear sector is anticipated to not only enhance operational standards but also contribute to the technological advancement and innovative practices within the industry.
