Central Florida Executives Partner with Habitat for Humanity to Promote Affordable Housing

Central Florida Executives Partner with Habitat for Humanity

On October 5, 2026, a group of nineteen top executives from Central Florida's prominent companies traded their business attire for tool belts in a heartfelt bid to contribute to their community. These leaders participated in Executive Build 2026, an annual event organized by Habitat for Humanity that coincides with World Habitat Day. This week-long initiative aims to bring attention to the pressing needs of affordable housing and enhance community engagement through hands-on participation.

The executives, representing organizations such as HCA Hospital, AdventHealth, and NVIDIA, rolled up their sleeves to install windows and apply Tyvek® house wrap on two homes located in Legacy Square, a new development in Sanford. These homes are part of a larger initiative to construct nineteen energy-efficient single-family homes in collaboration with community partners, aiming to offer affordable housing for low- to moderate-income families in the region.

Addressing Central Florida's Housing Crisis

As the event unfolded, Penny Seater, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Seminole-Apopka, highlighted the severe housing challenges faced by residents in Central Florida. Shockingly, 62% of renters in the area are cost-burdened, spending over 35% of their income on housing. In 2026, the estimated rental cost for a two-bedroom unit reached $2,254 per month, necessitating an income of approximately $90,160 for a full-time worker. Meanwhile, the median home price, at about $419,000, starkly contrasts the median household income, which is often much lower.

“World Habitat Day underscores the essential right to safe and adequate housing,” expressed Seater. “Yet here in Central Florida, the very individuals who teach our children, take care of our health, and ensure our safety often cannot afford decent housing, let alone a down payment on a home.” Habitat for Humanity seeks to bridge this gap by constructing homes that not only meet the needs of families but do so sustainably and affordably.

Building Communities, Not Just Houses

By engaging in this build, the executives not only gained first-hand experience of the challenges faced by many families but also contributed to a movement focused on creating long-term stability through homeownership.

The day featured speeches from various leaders, including Board Chair David Johnson and title sponsor Erik Sankey of Waste Pro USA. They emphasized the significant impact that collective efforts could make in transforming communities across Central Florida. Additionally, the participates interacted with Michelle, a future Habitat homeowner, whose story embodies the changes brought about by Habitat's mission.

The efforts of the Executive Build 2026 are more than just a charitable endeavor. They represent a shift in narrative—from addressing merely the physical needs of housing to fostering complete and supportive communities. This initiative marks a crucial step in Habitat for Humanity's ongoing mission, which has spanned over 35 years in the Central Florida region.

The Path Forward

With substantial commitments from local businesses and community members, Habitat for Humanity continues to advocate for affordable housing, demonstrating the powerful role that collaboration plays in making housing dreams a reality. Through programs designed to educate future homeowners and the support of motivated leaders willing to engage directly, hope for affordable and sustainable living in Central Florida becomes a tangible reality.
