Tom Horton Embarks on Paddling Expedition in Greece for ALS Awareness

Paddling Journey for Awareness and Support

This October, Tom Horton, a dedicated supporter of the ALS Network, will set sail on a remarkable expedition through the Greek Islands. This journey, taking place from October 5 to 12, is not just a physical challenge but a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, whose Greek heritage has shaped Tom’s deep appreciation for the culture and history of Greece.

Tom will be joined by a group of nine family members and friends, and together they will traverse the scenic passages of these islands. The expedition aims to raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease, while also generating financial support for individuals and families affected by the condition in the United States and Greece.

Tom shared, "This journey is more significant than the miles I will cover. It’s a chance to honor my mother's legacy, her connection to Greece, and the struggles faced by those impacted by ALS. I hope to inspire more people to engage in this cause and to highlight the importance of support networks for those living with ALS."

A Shared Commitment to ALS Awareness
The ALS Network and the Hellenic ALS Association have joined forces to undertake this iconic journey. Sheri Strahl, the President and CEO of ALS Network, emphasized the importance of Tom’s journey in its role as a profound acknowledgment of personal stories and connections that bind communities together. “Tom’s expedition will encourage a conversation about ALS, showing that compassion and determination transcend borders,” she remarked.

In tandem with Tom’s efforts, the Hellenic ALS Association will spearhead fundraising initiatives within Greece to bolster support services for individuals living with the disease. Additionally, all donations collected through the fundraising campaign in the U.S. will directly benefit the mission of the ALS Network. This mutual partnership represents a commitment from both organizations to improve the lives of those grappling with ALS.

Understanding ALS
Also referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS affects nerve cells crucial for voluntary muscle movements. The impact of this disease is global, yet access to essential resources and specialized care differs markedly depending on geographical area. The organizations emphasize the core belief that ALS should be addressed collectively, no matter where individuals are located.

Follow Tom’s Expedition
Throughout the paddling journey, both ALS Network and the Hellenic ALS Association will share updates, photographs, and videos online, allowing supporters from both nations to be part of the expedition's progress. Tom believes that this collaboration serves as a potent reminder of the compassion that thrives across nations and shared endeavors for change.

“Together, we hope this journey can motivate people in Greece and the United States to take actions that lead to better awareness of ALS and the opportunities for families affected by the disease,” said Aspa Karampela, the president of the Hellenic ALS Association.

As Tom begins this incredible journey, he hopes to carry the spirit of his mother and a message of hope and action to challenge the stigma and challenges faced by ALS patients and their families.
