Julius Meinl Expands Award-Winning Organic Fairtrade Line with Compostable Capsules

Julius Meinl Expands Its Organic Fairtrade Coffee Line

Julius Meinl, a prestigious Austrian coffee brand, has just unveiled an exciting new product at HostMilano: its double-certified Organic Fairtrade coffee line now includes industrially compostable capsules. This strategic expansion aims to enhance the brand's commitment to quality, flavor, and environmental sustainability more than ever.

The Latest Addition to the Originals Line

The introduction starts with Danube Delight, one of three blends in the new range, featuring a rich, intense flavor profile where dark chocolate meets hints of nutmeg spice. With over 160 years of craftsmanship, the Originals Organic Fairtrade coffee blends stand as a testament to the brand’s exquisite dedication. These award-winning blends have swiftly gained popularity among B2B clients interested in ethically sourced organic coffees that provide exceptional quality to their consumers, ensuring a sustainable future for the coffee industry.

The double certification offers farmers a stable minimum price, a Fairtrade premium, and an organic distinction, enabling them to invest in their communities, infrastructure, and sustainability projects.

Going Beyond Bean to Cup

"At Julius Meinl, we aimed to go beyond the traditional 'bean to cup' concept and take a significant step toward closing the loop in capsule-based coffee experiences," says Lazar Glasnovic, Head of Field Quality. The goal was to create a capsule that not only delivers the extraordinary taste recognized by the brand but also represents a sustainable choice for customers and the environment.

The process of industrial composting allows organic materials to be decomposed efficiently in a controlled environment. This practice produces nutrient-rich compost, boosting soil health, fertility, and water retention. In contrast, landfills create anaerobic conditions that hinder proper decomposition and emit methane—a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide.

Innovative Capsule Design

Developed in collaboration with Gualapack and FLO, these capsules are compatible with Lavazza Blue® systems and contain 11.1 grams of coffee, ensuring a perfect brew every time. The lid is crafted from a combination of paper, a metallized cellulose layer, and a PLA sealing layer—an innovative mix that provides excellent barrier protection and dosing performance, tested rigorously against standard designs. The capsule body uses C-PLA, a plant-based bioplastic with a significantly lower ecological footprint than conventional plastics, and PVOH, known for its outstanding oxygen barrier properties.

This design underwent thorough compostability testing and is certified with the OK compost INDUSTRIAL certification by TÜV AUSTRIA, a leading independent international testing and certification company operating in over 30 countries.

Quality and Convenience for Professionals

Julius Meinl's Professional Capsules deliver a coffee experience akin to barista quality in hotels, offices, and restaurants. Each capsule is packed with an enhanced quantity of coffee, ensuring a richer aroma and fuller flavor, providing professional café-quality coffee at the push of a button. The range includes both classic and industrially compostable variants, allowing partners to consistently offer high-quality coffee effortlessly.

These capsules are produced using a newly developed series of machines expertly calibrated for precise, complete extraction, guaranteeing an uncompromised coffee experience on demand.
