Workplace Risks and Misconduct Claims at All-Time Highs According to HR Acuity Study
Alarming Increase in Workplace Risks as Highlighted by HR Acuity's Annual Study
In an enlightening revelation, HR Acuity, a leader in employee relations case management, recently unveiled its Tenth Annual Employee Relations Benchmark Study. Spanning a decade's worth of data from 274 organizations—which collectively represent nearly 9 million employees—this study points to an unsettling trend: workplace risks and serious misconduct claims are surging at an unprecedented rate, all while organizational resources remain static.
The findings indicate that allegations related to discrimination, harassment, and retaliation have reached a staggering average of 15.5 issues per 1,000 employees, marking a peak not seen in recent history. Additionally, employee relations cases overall came close to a decade high with volumes hitting 145.5 issues per 1,000 in 2025—an alarming rate that drives home the urgent need for companies to enhance their employee relations strategies considerably.
If that weren’t concerning enough, various other workplace conflicts have also seen significant spikes, with behavioral issues surging by 30% in just a year (approx. 29.2 per 1,000 employees) and performance-related issues increasing by 27% compared to 2024. These figures paint a dire picture of the rising tensions and conflicts that professionals are grappling with in modern workplaces.
The report attributed many of the escalating issues to factors outside the workplace environment. A notable 60% of organizations indicated that current political tensions were a contributing factor, while 59% cited mental health challenges and 55% pointed to broader societal crises. Furthermore, social media-related cases almost doubled from 22% in 2024 to 39%, underscoring the need for organizations to rethink their approaches to employee relations in today's tech-driven age.
Despite this acknowledged rise in issues, the staffing levels dedicated to employee relations continue to fall short. The employee relations staffing ratio saw only a slight increase from 0.6 to 0.68 professionals per 1,000 employees, even as serious misconduct allegations have more than doubled since 2021. Shockingly, only one in four responding teams plan to bring on new employee relations staff in 2026, indicating a troubling disconnection between rising risks and available resources.
This gap is further compounded by significant blind spots in data tracking, leaving organizations ill-equipped to demonstrate risk defensibility when the stakes are highest. A mere 32% of those surveyed monitor substantiation by issue type, with many organizations lacking the rigorous investigation processes necessary to effectively manage and address workplace misconduct.
Interestingly, the study reveals that AI is beginning to reshape the landscape of employee relations, automating routine tasks while emphasizing the necessity for human oversight. As of 2025, 70% of employee relations teams either piloted or actively employed AI solutions. Many of these teams leveraged AI for routine tasks such as drafting investigation reports (46%) and summarizing interview transcripts (45%). A smaller, more advanced subset (21%) deployed AI to analyze data trends, a drastic jump from just 5% the previous year.
Moreover, AI adoption has prompted a surge in employees utilizing these technologies to compose complaints, which can result in more complex cases demanding detailed investigative efforts and discernments from the human workforce.
According to Deb Muller, CEO and founder of HR Acuity, “Ten years ago, the challenge was establishing employee relations as a discipline. Today, the challenge is scale.” The escalating case volumes, misconduct allegations, and growing complexity of workplace issues exacerbate the struggle for professionals working in this field. Successful organizations will leverage data and AI, not just to expedite processes, but to proactively mitigate risks before they escalate into more significant problems.
This compelling benchmark study was conducted in partnership with Isurus Market Research and Consulting, assessing employee relations practices across U.S. organizations with more than 1,000 employees during the period from January 23 to March 24, 2026. The research’s margin of error is estimated at ±5.9 percentage points, ensuring its reliability and relevance in addressing the pressing challenges faced by today’s workforce.
