The SPOT Hits Fort Lauderdale Beach to Save Lives
As spring break approaches, South Florida braces for an influx of visitors, particularly college students eager to enjoy their time on the beach. Recognizing the potential risks associated with increased substance use during this busy season, Care Resource's initiative, The SPOT (The Special Purpose Outreach Team), is mobilizing to ensure safety and well-being through its annual Spring Break Harm Reduction Campaign.
Emelina Martinez, the Harm Reduction Programs Manager, emphasizes the non-judgmental approach of The SPOT: "Every year thousands of students come to Fort Lauderdale for spring break, and they want to have a good time and party. We're not here to judge anyone's choices. We're here to keep people alive. The reality is that opioid overdose is a risk, especially with today's unpredictable drug supply. We want people to have the tools, the knowledge, and the confidence to respond and save a life if needed."
This proactive initiative aims to equip beachgoers and residents with resources to tackle the potential dangers associated with opioid use. With Broward County's only approved Syringe Services Program, The SPOT is committed to fostering a safe environment during the bustling spring break period.
Last year’s campaign saw The SPOT distribute nearly
13,700 doses of naloxone, an emergency medication that can reverse opioid overdoses, empowering community members to act in emergencies. In March, The SPOT will return to Fort Lauderdale Beach every weekend, providing naloxone and educating the public on life-saving techniques to prevent tragic overdoses.
Dr. Thomas Smith, Chief Behavioral Health Officer at Care Resource, underscores the significance of their mission: "Every dose of naloxone we put into someone's hands increases the chance that a life will be saved. Harm reduction is about meeting people where they are, without judgment, and giving them the tools and knowledge to reduce risk. During spring break, that approach becomes even more critical."
The SPOT, which operates as a mobile medical clinic, is dedicated to ensuring that harm reduction resources are not just available during weekends, but throughout the week as well. Their agenda includes distributing free naloxone, providing fentanyl test strips, offering HIV and Hepatitis C testing, delivering wound care along with basic medical services, and exchanging used syringes for new ones—all at no cost. Additionally, The SPOT educates the public about overdose prevention and safer substance use practices.
Empowering individuals through education and access to necessary resources is central to The SPOT's mission; it transforms bystanders into lifesavers. The initiative aims not only to prevent overdoses but to enhance the overall safety and health of the community.
