On July 16, 2026, during the Asia-Pacific Broadband Development Summit (BDS), the World Broadband Association (WBBA) made a significant announcement by launching AI-Net, a globally recognized certification aimed at enhancing data transmission frameworks for countries and network operators worldwide. This initiative marks a pivotal step in advancing digital infrastructure, transitioning from connection-based architectures to intelligent networking systems. The certification promotes the evolution of global networks from an All-Cloud era to an All-Intelligence paradigm, expediting the ongoing evolution towards smarter industry frameworks and technological transformations.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the global economy, there is an increasing demand for greater capacity, scalability, and intelligence from the foundational infrastructure. With industries moving to the next generation of connectivity labeled Net5.5G, traditional metrics like bandwidth and coverage no longer adequately represent a nation's competitive edge in the intelligence-driven era. Consequently, WBBA introduced the AI-Net certification to spotlight three critical areas: guiding national policies, fostering collaborative industry ecosystems, and enhancing the penetration of Net5.5G technology. During the certification launch, WBBA Director General Martin Creaner emphasized the dual benefits of the AI-Net certification. By ensuring deterministic performance characterized by high bandwidth, zero packet loss, and ultra-low latency, modern networking infrastructure fully unlocks the potential of AI. Secondly, the concept of "AI for Network" integrates intelligence directly into management devices and platforms. By embedding AI capabilities, networks evolve from passive routing systems into active cognitive systems equipped with intrinsic intelligence, self-recovery, and continuous self-optimization. This structural shift enables a transition to high-automation, agent-based operations and maintenance systems, significantly reducing operational complexity and maintenance costs for global operators.

The AI-Net certification encompasses both macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. At the macroeconomic level, it assesses the alignment of national policies and industry-building efforts. Key criteria involve political frameworks endorsing technologies like Net5.5G, IPv6, and intelligent networking, along with active contributions to global standards and ecosystem collaborations. At the microeconomic level, the assessment compares operators using the IP Development Index (IPDI), launched by WBBA at the MWC, to accurately measure the intelligence of live networks and the density of Advanced IP/Net5.5G deployments, identifying pioneers in the Net5.5G landscape.

Extending beyond global networks, the scope of this certification also includes end-to-end digital foundational elements, integrating interconnected data center networks and complex endogenous security systems into its core criteria. This multi-dimensional alignment not only highlights a nation's strategic foresight but also confirms the comprehensive, highly secure network capabilities delivered by leading operators in specialized sectors such as automated logistics, smart retail, and smart city applications.
