In the picturesque Loess Plateau of Shaanxi province, projects like the Shaanbei-Anhui 800-kilovolt direct current transmission initiative are set to transform the region's energy landscape. Standing atop the hills of Sixian town in Fuxian County, observers can marvel at the Baota Mountain Converter Station, a pivotal hub for transmitting wind and solar energy from northern Shaanxi to the Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin.
Groundbreaking Infrastructure
The Baota Mountain Converter Station is distinguished as China's first ultra-high voltage converter station established on a Grade-IV collapsible loess foundation. This site was strategically chosen due to its proximity to major power plants, such as the Yanchang Fuxian and Datang Fuxian facilities, facilitating effective connections to the broader 750-kV main power grid. Despite the challenging geological conditions typical of the Loess Plateau, which often lead to foundation settlement, innovative engineering solutions have been employed. Extensive testing was conducted to ensure that the structural integrity and stability of the foundation could withstand the unique challenges posed by the environment.
According to Huang Jia'nan from State Grid Shaanxi Electric Power Company, implementing a combination of compaction piles and cast-in-place piles marked a significant advancement in the project's design. Over 200,000 compaction piles and 10,000 cast-in-place piles were used to create a solid foundation, establishing the Baota Mountain Converter Station as a benchmark for future projects in similar terrains.
Environmental Considerations
The geographical proximity of the converter station to local apple orchards necessitated a strong commitment to environmental protection. Construction teams meticulously managed dust suppression techniques to ensure minimal disruption to both local ecosystems and nearby residents. The Shaanxi section of the Shaanbei-Anhui project spans an impressive 244.6 kilometers, traversing three cities and integrating into the region's delicate environmental landscape.
The commitment to preserving nature is evident in the construction methodologies applied. The use of aerial ropeways for material transportation over challenging terrains like the Qinling Mountains minimizes ecological footprint while ensuring the sustainable progression of infrastructure. In fact, more than 59 aerial ropeways were established, allowing materials to be transported effectively, thereby significantly lessening the environmental impact of construction activities.
Technical Challenges
Shaanxi's power transmission projects face various adversities, from steep gradients and stringent weather conditions to technological advancements during construction. The Hanzhong 750-kilovolt power transmission project represents a critical component of the local grid, addressing winter peak demands while seamlessly integrating southern Shaanxi's energy sources into China's broader west-to-east power transmission scheme.

Workers cope with the cold and low visibility in the Qinling Mountains, where construction activities often take place at elevations of 1,200 meters. Engineering ingenuity also finds its place through the introduction of robotic technology, designed to navigate challenging terrains and conduct inspections autonomously. The 'piercing-eyed elf' robot is an example, capable of performing intricate evaluations of gas-insulated switchgear.
