Introducing the GDUSA Sports Graphic Design Awards: Celebrating Creativity in Sports Design
The sports industry is known for its vibrant visuals and energetic branding, yet professionals in this field often lack a dedicated platform to showcase their creativity. Addressing this gap, Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) has announced the launch of the inaugural GDUSA Sports Graphic Design Awards™. This exciting new competition will recognize outstanding design work in sports, celebrating creativity that transcends conventional boundaries.
The demand for high-quality visual identity in sports has never been greater. As artificial intelligence automates basic design tasks, the need for uniquely human creativity becomes more essential, particularly in areas as complex as sports branding. Look around, and it’s evident; today’s sports entities are not just crafting logos but entire ecosystem identities that encompass uniforms, merchandise, vibrant campaign strategies, broadcast graphics, and immersive stadium experiences.
During the past year, audiences have seen a remarkable shift in their viewing habits, with streaming accounting for 47.5% of TV consumption in December 2025. This evolution has prompted sports teams and leagues to innovate their visual storytelling across various platforms. As fans increasingly demand premium visual experiences, significant investments are being made into everything from rebranding initiatives to advanced graphic packages and stadium display systems.
Despite the increasing complexity of sports design, those working in the field have not had their voices heard. The GDUSA Sports Graphic Design Awards aim to change that narrative by shining a spotlight on these creatives and the monumental work they accomplish. Gordon Kaye, the editor and publisher of GDUSA stated, "Sports design may be one of the most demanding disciplines in the profession. It must resonate instantly, evoke emotion, and adapt seamlessly across every platform from smartphones to the arena displays."
The competition is open to agencies, independent designers, and in-house teams around the globe. Participation is encouraged from all levels of sports including professional, collegiate, esports, and amateur. Participants can submit their entries across six main categories:
1. Team/Event Brand Identity: This category showcases identity systems and branding work that define teams, events, and sports properties.
2. Marketing Campaigns: Projects in this area should demonstrate visual components that foster awareness, ticket sales, fan engagement, and conversions.
3. Digital & Broadcast Graphics: Entries in this category will focus on motion packages, social graphics, scorebugs, and all assets designed for screens and live broadcasts.
4. Apparel & Merchandise Graphics: This category celebrates uniform graphics and merchandise that translate brand equity into wearable designs.
5. Experiential Graphics: This focuses on venue graphics, fan activations, and wayfinding systems enhancing the physical in-person experience.
6. Digital Platforms: Works that enrich the fan experience through apps and websites, encompassing everything from ticket sales to gaming interfaces are encouraged here.
To ensure the quality of submissions, a peer jury composed of industry experts will judge entries based on their creativity, impact, and originality. A winner will be chosen from each category, along with Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards being awarded to the overall finalists.
The 2026 jury consists of leading sports designers and identity practitioners: Sagi Haviv, Nick Matarese, Nate Evans, and Jaden Roberts-Thomas. Their experience covers high-profile clients and event branding, showcasing the diverse talent within the sports design community.
Graphic Design USA, established in 1963, continues to serve the graphic design profession through various initiatives including this award. By introducing the Sports Graphic Design Awards, GDUSA further solidifies its dedication to elevating the craft that shapes sports into an integral part of culture. With the submission window open from March 9 to April 13, 2026, designers worldwide are encouraged to demonstrate their creative prowess and be part of this landmark event in sports design.
