HBCU Executive Leadership Institute Announces 2026 Fellowship Cohort to Empower Future Leaders

HBCU Executive Leadership Institute Welcomes 2026 Community of Fellows

The HBCU Executive Leadership Institute (HBCU ELI) at Clark Atlanta University has proudly announced its 2026 Community of Fellows, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter aimed at fostering leadership within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This sixth cohort consists of over 40 exceptional individuals selected from a varied pool of candidates across more than 30 institutions. They are set to serve as the next generation of leaders, including presidents and senior executives in HBCUs, Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs).

The selection process for the Fellows is notably rigorous and multi-faceted, aiming to identify individuals who demonstrate a blend of institutional impact, readiness for executive roles, and a steadfast commitment to the mission of HBCUs. Eligible candidates must have a minimum of ten years of experience in higher education or a related field, alongside three years in positions equivalent to dean-level leadership or higher. As Dr. George T. French, Jr., President of Clark Atlanta University, stated, today’s institutions need leaders capable of preserving their heritage while driving innovation. This year's cohort is well-equipped to strengthen both the community and the HBCUs that serve as critical opportunities for many.

As the educational landscape continues to evolve, the need for well-trained executive leaders who can adeptly navigate a multitude of challenges has never been greater. The HBCU ELI provides a comprehensive program designed to equip participants with the skills and competencies necessary to address financial, operational, and governance issues, as well as matters concerning faculty relations, student mental health, and free speech on campuses.

In this year's program, fellows will engage in a structured learning experience that revolves around HBCU ELI's 13 core competencies, which focus on both general leadership skills and those specifically tailored to the HBCU context:

Core Leadership Competencies:

1. Cultivating Relationships & Networks
2. Communicating with Influence
3. Emotional Intelligence Skills
4. Models for Excellence
5. Making Sound Decisions
6. Strategic Planning

HBCU-Specific Executive Competencies:

1. Navigating Board Governance
2. Building High-Performing Teams and Pipeline
3. Funding the Future
4. Leading Finance and Operations Stability
5. Delivering Academic Excellence
6. Leading Through Uncertainty and Crisis
7. Educating for Racial and Social Justice

Dr. Phyllis Worthy-Dawkins, Executive Director of HBCU ELI, expressed pride in the immersive, competency-driven experience provided for the Fellows, emphasizing the importance of strategic clarity and mission alignment in leadership roles. She highlighted the unique talent and discipline that this year's cohort brings in the face of complex challenges, prioritizing the well-being of students and the sustainability of their institutions.

Dr. Cheryl Davenport Dozier, Program Coordinator for the Community of Fellows and President Emeritus of Savannah State University, echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement over the inclusion of several HBCU alumni among the new Fellows. This is seen as an integral component of a focused effort to prepare future leaders in higher education effectively.

The program officially commenced on January 3, 2026, with a virtual orientation, and ongoing bi-monthly sessions will continue until April. Participants will later meet for an in-person residency from June 10 to 12, 2026, at Clark Atlanta University's campus, culminating in a virtual leadership celebration on November 20, 2026.
