Sun Life Enhances Cancer Support by Offering Proactive Second Opinions to Members
Sun Life's Proactive Approach to Cancer Diagnoses
In a significant move to support its members, Sun Life U.S. has announced the expansion of its Expert Cancer Review (ECR) service. This initiative aims to connect members with oncology specialists to obtain second opinions on cancer diagnoses right when they need it most—time of diagnosis.
Understanding the Need for Expert Opinions
Cancer continues to be one of the most commonly diagnosed and expensive diseases to treat in the United States. According to research from Sun Life's 2025 High Cost Claims Report, the costs related to cancer claims can average anywhere from $235,000 for solid tumors to over $300,000 for blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. Such staggering figures underline the importance of ensuring that members receive accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans.
Traditionally, patients often grapple with uncertainty and doubt during their diagnosis, especially with the emotional burden that comes with cancer. Sun Life aims to alleviate some of this stress by proactively offering second opinions to its members when they file claims for disability or supplemental health related to cancer.
The Benefits of Proactive Engagement
Starting this year, Sun Life will reach out to eligible members upon filing a cancer-related claim. By doing so, members will be guided toward the Expert Cancer Review services associated with their employer's Sun Life stop-loss policy. This means that individuals enrolled in Sun Life's disability or supplemental benefits can access these critical resources without additional hurdles.
