Caterpillar Inc. Announces Leadership Transition in Resource Industries

Caterpillar Inc. has officially announced a leadership change within its Resource Industries segment that marks a significant shift in the company's strategy heading into 2027. Denise Johnson, currently the group president, has decided to retire effective February 1, 2027. This decision comes after a remarkable tenure where she played a pivotal role in transforming Caterpillar's mining operations and maintaining its competitive edge during challenging market conditions.

As of November 1, 2026, Derrick York, who is presently the president of Solar Turbines and has been with the company for over 16 years, will take over as the group president for Resource Industries. Johnson will not be stepping away from the company entirely; she will take on an advisory role to ensure a smooth transition and offer her extensive expertise during this time of change.

Johnson's career at Caterpillar has been nothing short of transformative. She joined the company in 2011 and took the reins of the Resource Industries group in 2016, amid one of the most significant downturns in the mining sector. Her leadership not only stabilized operations but also guided the segment back to profitability, culminating in its strongest financial performance in over a decade.

"Denise took on a critical role during one of the mining industry's most challenging times," remarked Joe Creed, chairman and CEO of Caterpillar. He emphasized her disciplined approach in restoring profitability and positioning Caterpillar ahead in mining autonomy and technological advancements. Creed also expressed gratitude for her impactful contributions, highlighting the relationships she nurtured with customers and the legacy she leaves behind.

Throughout her career, Denise Johnson has garnered respect and recognition in the mining and engineering communities. Her involvement on numerous industry boards and committees has exemplified her dedication to advancing the future of mining globally. Under her guidance, Caterpillar has made strides in integrating new technologies that shape modern mining operations.

On the other hand, Derrick York brings a wealth of experience and a reputation for strong leadership into his new role. With a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, York has previously served in various positions within Caterpillar, including senior vice president of the Oil, Gas, and Marine division, where he demonstrated his ability to drive results and inspire teams.

Creed expressed confidence in York's capacity to guide the Resource Industries segment through its next phase of innovation and growth. "Derrick is a highly respected leader who understands our customers, our strategy, and the industries we serve," said Creed, highlighting the seamless integration of York's vision with Caterpillar's overarching goals.

Denise Johnson, reflecting on her career and the future of the organization, stated, "The greatest accomplishment of any leader is leaving an organization better positioned for the future. I'm proud of the foundation we've built, the people we've developed and the enduring impact this team will continue to make. Derrick is the right leader to build on that foundation and move Resource Industries forward."

As Caterpillar prepares for this transition, the company remains focused on solving some of the toughest challenges in the construction and mining equipment sectors. With a robust global dealer network and a commitment to innovation backed by advanced technologies, Caterpillar is poised to continue shaping its future and maintaining its status as a leader in the industry.
