NIIMBL Invites 100 Students to Engage in the Innovative 2025 eXperience Program

The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) has recently announced the selection of a hundred first- and second-year college students to participate in the upcoming 2025 NIIMBL eXperience program. This initiative, which aims to connect students with the biopharmaceutical industry, saw applications from 75 academic institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico.

Scheduled to take place in June 2025, the NIIMBL eXperience offers a unique, week-long immersive program designed to provide students with valuable insights into various career opportunities within biopharmaceuticals. Participants will visit actual manufacturing sites, engage with industry professionals, and partake in hands-on workshops and activities. This exposure is intended to bolster the talent pipeline in the biopharmaceutical manufacturing sector, providing a pathway for students to explore potential careers.

According to John Balchunas, NIIMBL's Workforce Director, increasing awareness about career opportunities in biopharmaceutical manufacturing among students is vital for the sector's sustainability and growth. Balchunas stated, "The NIIMBL eXperience is pivotal in establishing connections between the industry and fresh talent sources that can support the uplift of the domestic biopharmaceutical manufacturing landscape."

In September 2024, NIIMBL allocated a total of $600,000 to seven distinct organizations that will serve as host locations for the 2025 eXperience programs. These sites include:
  • - Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (June 1-7, 2025)
  • - Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) at North Carolina State University (June 1-7, 2025)
  • - Puerto Rico Science Technology and Research Trust (June 1-7, 2025)
  • - Purdue University (June 2-6, 2025)
  • - Santa Clara University (June 22-28, 2025)
  • - University of Houston (June 2-6, 2025)
  • - Wistar Institute (June 22-27, 2025)

Since its inception in 2019, the NIIMBL eXperience program has witnessed significant growth. Initially, it aimed to enroll just five students, but as of 2025, the initiative has expanded to accommodate 100 participants across seven unique programs. A total of 139 students from 88 academic institutions have already benefited from this opportunity.

"It is incredibly gratifying to observe the evolution of this program over the past six years. We have successfully reached more students each year, creating greater chances for the biopharmaceutical sector to attract the talent it needs," Balchunas added.
