MOL Develops Innovative Skater to Streamline Vehicle Loading on Car Carriers

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), a prominent name in the maritime industry, has recently unveiled an innovative solution aimed at improving the efficiency of vehicle loading on car carriers. The company has collaborated with Yamato Chain Industry and MOL Techno-Trade to develop a specialized device known as the 'Skater'. This new technology is designed to assist with the movement of vehicles that are temporarily incapable of self-propulsion within the confines of a car carrier.

In traditional loading operations, when a vehicle runs out of fuel or experiences battery depletion, it becomes incapable of moving independently. This scenario often leads to significant delays in loading operations as external towing vehicles need to be arranged. Delays of several hours have been reported, particularly at ports where arranging a towing vehicle can be a complex task. However, with the introduction of the Skater, vehicles can now be relocated within approximately five minutes, minimizing delays and enhancing the overall efficiency of car transportation procedures.

The Skater serves as a dedicated piece of equipment that is directly attached to the vehicle in question, facilitating its movement without relying on external resources. This innovation allows for the immediate resumption of loading activities, thereby contributing to a more reliable and stable automotive shipping framework.

Car carriers typically transport thousands of vehicles in a highly dense configuration, with approximately 30 centimeters of clearance in the front and back, 10 centimeters from side to side, and a minimum vertical clearance of 10 centimeters. The strict loading sequence adopted in these vessels is critical. Even a single incapacitated vehicle can disrupt the loading of surrounding units, exacerbating delays and complicating the overall loading process. The Skater effectively addresses this issue by allowing for rapid relocation of a vehicle that cannot self-propel.

Visual depictions of the car carrier's interior and the deployment of the Skater illustrate the practical advantages of this new solution. The safety and operational efficiency brought about by this technology are expected to significantly enhance the loading processes at ports globally, ensuring that automotive transportation remains both secure and dependable.

MOL remains committed to fortifying its logistics capabilities and prioritizing the delivery of safe, high-quality transportation solutions. The introduction of the Skater is a testament to this commitment, as it directly addresses the challenges associated with vehicle loading and supports the broader goal of maintaining efficient automotive supply chains.

As MOL continues its efforts, further developments in shipping innovation and operational reliability are anticipated, confirming its position as a leader in the maritime transport sector.
