Understanding Next-Generation Power Business through Watt-Bit Collaboration at JPI Seminar

JPI Seminar: Next-Generation Power Business

On October 8, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host an insightful seminar titled "Exploring Next-Generation Power Business through Watt-Bit Collaboration". This event features Ren Taro Hayashi, Senior Manager of the Environmental, Energy, and Resource Strategy Group at Japan Research Institute, who will delve into the evolving power business landscape influenced by AI and data centers.

Seminar Background

In February 2025, the Japanese government approved the national strategy "GX2040", aimed at addressing the surge in power demand driven by the widespread adoption of generative AI. The increasing use of AI necessitates substantial computational capabilities from data centers, which in turn require significant amounts of electricity. As industries from semiconductors to automotive leverage AI advancements, the challenge to reconcile power supply with this soaring demand has become increasingly complex.

Major data center users, especially giants like GAFA, are on the lookout for additional clean power sources. However, they face numerous challenges, including transmission line limitations and constraints on introducing renewable energy, making the procurement of suitable power increasingly difficult. In response to these challenges, GX2040 proposes effective collaboration between power and communication infrastructures—termed as “Watt-Bit Collaboration.”

What to Expect

The seminar aims to provide participants, particularly businesses considering investments in data centers or power supply, with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics between data centers and electricity. Topics will include:

1. Overview of Data Centers
2. Impact of Data Centers on the Power Industry
3. Current Policies Relating to Data Centers and Power Supply:
- Discussions by Experts on Digital Infrastructure
- The GX2040 Program
- Insights from the Watt-Bit Collaboration Public-Private Conference
- GX Industry Location Working Group
4. Q&A Session
5. Networking and Exchange Meeting

The networking segment offers an invaluable opportunity for participants to connect with each other, mentors, and industry leaders, facilitating business expansion and collaboration.

Participation Options

Attendees can choose to join in person, via live stream, or through archived sessions (available for two weeks). The fee is set at 37,310 JPY (tax included) per individual. Discounts are available for groups from the same company or related companies. Public sector participants can enjoy a special rate of 11,000 JPY for up to two attendees, but this is restricted to in-person or live stream participation.
