As Luke Bodensteiner, the general manager of Soldier Hollow, mentioned in an interview, this initiative is a form of contingency planning aimed at ensuring that 2034's winter sports events will not be hampered by climate fluctuations.

Aspen Snowmass, another premier ski destination, recently adopted this technology, focusing on reducing reliance on early-season snowmaking. According to Chris Miller, ASPEN's senior vice president of sustainability, this investment not only conserves valuable water and energy resources but also enhances the overall guest experience during the early season. This strategic move is aligned with modern sustainability goals, demonstrating how ski resorts are increasingly turning their focus to eco-friendly practices.

One of the key advantages of the Snow Secure system is its environmental benefits. Ski resorts typically resort to energy-intensive snowmaking during late autumn, which requires significant energy and water consumption. However, with proper snow storage methods, snowfall can be made during optimal winter conditions, piled, and then insulated for later use in the season. Notably, resorts that have employed this technology report an average snow retention rate of an impressive 80%.

Within a mere two-year timeframe, Snow Secure has recorded nearly 20 successful installations across North America, with more than 150 implementations worldwide over the past four years. Each resort can set up multiple snow storage units, maximizing their capacity and efficiency. Antti Lauslahti, CEO of Snow Secure, stated that the demand for this technology signals a significant breakthrough in the market, with ongoing discussions occurring with about 80 resorts across the continent.

This trend is not only about enhancing guest satisfaction but also about preparing for future challenges posed by climate change. The technology also supports larger projects such as the one at Levi Ski Resort in Finland, where snow storage systems guarantee the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup events every November, showcasing the potential for broad applicability in various climates and geographical locations.

As the ski industry ultimately evolves, it will be critical for resorts to adopt innovative solutions to mitigate climate-related risks.
