Conclusion of the Second Global 'Taste of China' Coffee Bean Competition
On July 30, 2025, Shanghai hosted the conclusion of the highly anticipated second edition of the 'Taste of China' global coffee bean competition. This event has garnered substantial attention, showcasing the unique taste preferences of Chinese coffee consumers, distinctly contrasting with traditional coffee markets in the West and Southeast Asia.
Organized by the Hongqiao International Coffee Harbor, this two-day competition featured a lineup of 82 premium green coffee beans sourced from 16 countries. Among the participating countries were renowned coffee producers such as Brazil, Ethiopia, Colombia, and Vietnam. Interestingly, the event also highlighted emerging regions like Thailand, Ecuador, and Burundi, reflecting the diverse sourcing range of coffee beans.
The jury consisted of notable professionals from major coffee chains, including Luckin Coffee, Starbucks, and Cotti Coffee, alongside national brewing champions and coffee enthusiasts. Their expertise was instrumental in evaluating and providing insights into the evolving preferences of the local consumer base. This competition serves as an important tool, allowing producers and roasters clearer visibility into the tastes of the Chinese market.
What's particularly fascinating is that, for the first time, the top ten coffees from the competition were made available for bidding both online and offline, attracting considerable interest from roasters, café owners, and coffee lovers. Moreover, a national tasting tour featuring the 30 award-winning coffees will be conducted across main cities in China, with the most popular coffee being announced based on public feedback after the tour concludes.
The Hongqiao International Coffee Harbor has been a key player in fostering relationships with over 200 international coffee companies, facilitating trade and exchange of goods that encompasses around 60 countries, generating business worth more than 3 billion yuan annually. The success of the 'Taste of China' event not only spotlights the domestic demand for green coffee beans but also opens pathways for international producers to tap the untapped potential of Chinese coffee drinkers.
As consumer preferences continue to shape the industry, events like the 'Taste of China' competition pave the way for broader engagement and understanding within the global coffee community. This burgeoning market presents an exciting frontier where both traditional and innovative approaches to coffee production can be explored, adapted, and celebrated. The future of coffee consumption in China seems bright, with increased collaborations expected between local roasters and international suppliers, fueled by events that emphasize the cultural significance and growing appreciation for varied coffee flavors amongst Chinese consumers.
The outcomes of this year's competition shed light on emerging trends that may revolutionize the way coffee is perceived and consumed in China, serving both as inspiration and a call to action for all stakeholders in the coffee value chain to innovate and respond to the nuanced demands of this unique market segment.
