As artificial intelligence continues to grow exponentially, it is driving one of the largest infrastructure investment cycles in history, with cumulative spending projected to reach an astounding $31.6 trillion by 2050, as reported by PwC's Global Data Center Outlook. Mindstream Energy is strategically positioning itself at the forefront of this evolution with the development of its Al-Risha Sovereign AI and Digital Infrastructure Campus in Jordan. This ambitious project is built on the foundational principle of placing computing infrastructure where energy resources are already available.

The Al-Risha campus, sprawling over 245 acres, aims to integrate scalable digital infrastructure with a powerful energy backbone. Initially set to deploy 70 megawatts (MW) of power by the second quarter of 2027, the project plans for future scalability that could reach approximately 400 MW. Mark F. Thimmig, Mindstream's Chairman and CEO, emphasizes that managing the energy demands of AI infrastructures is as crucial as securing computing resources. "AI infrastructure is rapidly becoming an energy challenge as much as a computing challenge," Thimmig notes, highlighting the necessity for reliable power sources and infrastructural support.

Understanding the investment landscape is paramount for Mindstream Energy. PwC identifies power availability, connectivity, and government support as key drivers for the future of AI infrastructure locations. This insight is integral to Mindstream’s strategy, which prioritizes energy sources before developing computing capabilities.

"We started our strategy with the energy source," Thimmig said, articulating the vision behind the Al-Risha campus, which cleverly melds containerized natural gas generation with modular AI infrastructure, ensuring security and reliability. Mindstream has secured a long-term natural gas supply agreement with Jordan's National Petroleum Company (NPC), thus providing the campus with on-site power generation capabilities. This, coupled with government incentives for digital infrastructure development, sets the stage for a successful launch.

According to PwC's projections, the Middle East will likely draw around $1.1 trillion in data center investments by 2050. The region's inherent advantages—its capacity for coordinated energy planning, government policy support, and strategic geographical location—position it as a pivotal player in the digital infrastructure landscape. Thimmig acknowledges Jordan's political stability and infrastructure commitments as significant factors in their decision to locate the Al-Risha project there.

Furthermore, as governments strive for greater control over data management within their borders, the demand for sovereign AI and data residency will surge. Mindstream’s Al-Risha project is structured to address this demand, supporting functionalities in AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and advanced digital applications while maintaining an emphasis on independent power sources and secure telecommunications.

The Al-Risha campus is also designed for modular deployment, which will allow Mindstream to expand its capabilities in response to customer demand effectively. The company has strategically engaged a variety of partners across sectors, with 22 companies currently in collaboration discussions, focusing on enriching the digital infrastructure ecosystem surrounding the Al-Risha campus.

As investment in AI and data centers accelerates, the queries from businesses and governments will shift. It is no longer just about establishing a data center; it's become imperative to secure a consistent energy supply, deploy infrastructures swiftly, and ensure economic operation while fulfilling sovereign and resilience requirements.
