Webinar on LGBTQ+ Inclusion Training Collaborates with Dutch Enterprises

Promoting LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Japanese Workplaces

In a recent initiative, Randstad, a leading human resource service provider in Japan, is taking significant steps towards eradicating workplace discrimination against LGBTQI+ individuals. In collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Embassy, the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce Japan (NCCJ), and NN Life Insurance, Randstad is organizing a webinar titled "Thinking About LGBTQ+ Inclusion with Dutch Companies". The event will feature Shinya Arita, a board member of the certified NPO Nijiiro Diversity, who will elucidate the fundamentals of LGBTQ+ issues and provide clear actions for workplaces.

Understanding the Current Situation

According to a survey conducted by Randstad, a staggering 34% of LGBTQI+ workers in Japan have faced discrimination in their workplaces. The situation appears even more daunting for the Gen Z demographic, where 46% report experiencing discrimination, and 31% have felt uncomfortable enough to leave a job due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. This points to a significant loss of potential talent due to a lack of inclusion. When comparing attitudes towards inclusion across seven countries (Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, the UK, and the USA), Japan ranked below the average in five areas related to organizational practices. This clearly indicates that Japan's corporate approach to inclusion needs substantial improvement. However, many employers express confusion, indicating that while they understand the importance of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDI&B), they often do not know the next steps to take.

A Step Forward for Workplace Inclusion

The upcoming webinar aims to elevate the conversation around LGBTQ+ inclusion in Japanese workplaces. Expert Shinya Arita brings wealth of experience in supporting LGBTQ+ policy implementations and will address queries from participants, such as "What steps can allies take?" and "How can we advance EDI&B in our organization?" This 45-minute online session, held during lunchtime, is designed to encourage participation by being free of charge, inviting people from various sectors to join the dialogue.

Lessons from Dutch Employers

The four hosting organizations have previously held five roundtable discussions since April 2023 regarding EDI&B, emphasizing the significance and methods of achieving such aims. The Dutch companies, known for their forward-thinking work culture, propose this initiative under Randstad's guidance to better share their experiences and insights into employer branding and the importance of EDI&B in Japan. Since the third roundtable, the Japan chapter has actively participated in discussions, fostering dialogue with about 200 individuals about pressing social challenges related to workforce diversity.

As October is recognized for its celebration of individuals who come out regarding their sexual orientation or gender identity, coinciding with International Coming Out Day on October 11, the timing of this webinar is particularly relevant. Together, the hosting organizations are committed to advocating for the success of diverse talents and creating an inclusive environment where everyone can be their authentic selves at work.
