Strengthening Research Ties: A New Era for Okayama University
On August 1, 2025, Okayama University (located in Okayama City and headed by President Yasuyuki Nasu) forged a collaborative agreement with the Saga Synchrotron Light Research Center (SAGA-LS), operated by the public interest foundation of Saga Prefecture. This memorandum aims to facilitate mutual use of facilities and expertise, enhancing ongoing research endeavors. The agreement was signed in the main building of the Tsushima campus of Okayama University with a formal ceremony attended by key officials from both institutions.
In his opening remarks, Yoshito Nasu emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that it promises not only to advance synchrotron radiation research but also to deepen collaboration through the shared use of analytical equipment and knowledge. This alliance strives to bolster research capabilities, strengthen academia-industry-government partnerships, and promote innovation, positioning Okayama University as a central contributor to regional research networks under the J-PEAKS initiative.
Kazuuo Hirasawa, the Director of SAGA-LS, expressed his honor in formalizing this partnership with Okayama University, the first university to cooperate with SAGA-LS outside of the Kyushu region. He highlighted that this unique synchrotron light facility has been a vital asset in advancing local industries, and through this partnership, they aim to create a comprehensive agreement that further contributes to education, research, and industrial development.
The SAGA-LS plays a crucial role in research collaboration, being the only synchrotron light facility in Kyushu that actively engages with universities, corporations, and research institutions for joint usage. It has established a multilayered network of collaboration with local universities, businesses, and government, effectively fostering advancements in the synchrotron light network. Its proximity to Okayama University (approximately two hours away) adds to the convenience of this collaboration.
Both institutions will utilize their advanced research infrastructure, personnel, and knowledge in a range of cooperative fields involving synchrotron radiation. The agreement is part of the J-PEAKS initiatives, which seeks to build research capacity and enhance the skills of technical staff at Okayama University, reinforcing its reputation as a unique and core research university.
Additionally, President Nasu highlighted that Okayama University is remarkably close to Japan's prominent synchrotron facility, SPring-8. With many researchers at Okayama University utilizing this facility, the collaboration with SAGA-LS is promising amidst SPring-8's current large-scale renovations. Enhanced cooperation among synchrotron facilities and educational institutions is expected to significantly contribute to the advancement of science, technology, innovation, and social transformation in Japan.
This partnership not only signifies a monumental step for Okayama University but also illuminates the path for future collaboration across various sectors within the scientific landscape of Japan.
This announcement was made during Okayama University’s regular press conference. Stay tuned for more updates on the collaborative research initiatives between Okayama University and the Saga Synchrotron Light Research Center.
