Ibuki Minami's Solo Exhibition 'Art Core' at GOCA by Garde
Starting on May 8, 2025, and running until June 28, 2025, the art gallery GOCA by Garde is hosting the solo exhibition of artist Ibuki Minami, titled 'Art Core'. This exhibition is a significant milestone for GARDE, a Tokyo-based company specializing in interior design and consulting, as it marks their first overseas art gallery in New York City.
GOCA by Garde serves as a critical platform for showcasing Japanese and Asian artists to a global audience, featuring diverse art forms including paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. Its mission is to promote contemporary art from Japan and Asia, aiming to create a cultural exchange space that fosters dialogue.
In 'Art Core', Minami presents his latest works characterized by minimalistic compositions that merge Eastern and Western philosophies. This exhibition aims to prompt viewers to explore the essence of creativity in the digital age while reflecting on the foundational thoughts behind artistic expression.
Born in 1995 in Japan and raised in the United States, Minami's heritage is intertwined with both Japanese and Korean cultures. His art vividly reflects influences from these three cultures, engaging with Eastern philosophies such as Zen and Yin-Yang, alongside Western transcendentalism. Through his artistic practice, Minami encourages audiences to contemplate the core essence of art. The title 'Art Core' aptly encapsulates his mission to pursue, discover, and express the nucleus of artistic creation within his works.
Highlights of the Exhibition
In this exhibition, visitors can explore three distinct series: 'Minimalism Torus', 'Minimalism Dichotomy', and 'Algorithm'.
Minimalism Torus
The 'Minimalism Torus' series extensively employs toroidal motifs. Its visual expression evokes the Enso circle, a form often used in Zen art to symbolize enlightenment, truth, and the universe.
Minimalism Dichotomy
Inspired by the principles of duality such as Yin and Yang and movement and stillness, the 'Minimalism Dichotomy' series features paintings divided into multiple sections. Some works challenge the concept of duality by incorporating divisions of three or five.
Algorithm
The 'Algorithm' series showcases compositions reminiscent of electronic circuits and spider webs, where paint is layered through mathematical yet expressive processes. Minami’s unique artistic sensibility draws inspiration from algorithms and computer programming, leading to vivid color combinations and varying textures—ranging from bright hues to monochromatic tones.
The GOCA by Garde Gallery
Located in New York’s Chelsea district, GOCA focuses on contemporary art from Japan and Asia. Through paintings, sculptures, and ceramics, it introduces both emerging and renowned artists while aiming to enhance cultural dialogue. Chelsea, historically an industrial area, transformed into a vibrant art hub in the 1980s as artists sought affordable spaces amidst rising costs in SoHo. Today, it stands as a global center for art and culture, with approximately 200 galleries showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions.
As a Japanese company situated in such a competitive art scene, GARDE's presence in Chelsea has surpassed expectations, demonstrating the growing interest in intercultural artistic exchange. Minami’s works not only highlight the artistic narratives influenced by his cultural background but also resonate with broader themes of existence and identity in today’s world.
