Dive into Jiu-Jitsu History
Jiu-jitsu, often referred to as Brazilian jiu-jitsu or Gracie jiu-jitsu, is a grappling-based martial art rooted in Japan. Its evolution began with Mitsuyo Maeda, who introduced jiu-jitsu to Brazil, leading to the Gracie family's prominent role in developing the sport further.
Distinctive Features of Jiu-Jitsu
Focusing on ground techniques, jiu-jitsu employs techniques like joint locks and chokeholds to determine victories. Unlike other martial arts where physical size can be an advantage, jiu-jitsu's structure ensures that techniques and strategies hold more weight, providing a level playing field for participants.
The SJJJF events categorize competitors by age and weight to ensure fairness, making it accessible for both serious competitors and hobbyists. The absence of strikes enhances safety, encouraging participation from all demographics, including women and the elderly, with instances of 80-year-olds training alongside youths.
