Expanding Access to Preventive Health Screenings in Arizona Communities

Bringing Preventive Health Screenings Closer to Arizona Communities

In Arizona, a new initiative is making strides in improving access to preventive health screenings for residents throughout the state. With the recognition that a straightforward health screening can reveal potential health issues before they escalate into serious conditions, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Health Choice (AZ Blue Health Choice) and Zeihan ProHealth are collaborating to bring this essential healthcare service to Arizonans who might otherwise struggle to access it.

Health screenings, while crucial, are often out of reach for many individuals, particularly those who do not regularly visit healthcare providers. To address this gap, AZ Blue Health Choice and Zeihan ProHealth have trained around 40 community health workers across Arizona in the fundamentals of conducting biometric screenings. This initiative, which took place in Flagstaff and Phoenix, focuses on various health parameters such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, and A1C levels, equipping community health workers with essential tools to identify potential health concerns and guide individuals towards further care.

Empowering Community Health Workers
The training is a vital part of the long-term strategy aimed at fostering enhanced health in Arizona communities. According to Heather Carter, CEO of AZ Blue Health Choice, community health workers play a crucial role in improving public health. They are often residents of the communities they serve, allowing them to build trusted relationships and effectively bridge the gap between people and necessary health resources.

Participants in the training included 15 community health workers from “Helping Families in Need,” a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting families in Arizona with healthcare coverage and additional resources. Edny Gonzalez, co-executive director of the organization, emphasized the significant value of the training, highlighting how it strengthens the initiatives already being undertaken in the communities they serve.

“Having additional training gives our team more tools, knowledge, and confidence to help families navigate systems and connect to the services they need,” Gonzalez noted. This empowerment is essential as community health workers are regarded as trusted figures, capable of addressing healthcare gaps in personal, culturally sensitive, and accessible manners.

Addressing Health Concerns Early
The impact of this training extends beyond the individuals directly involved. Each trained community health worker is now capable of leveraging their new skills within their communities, generating increased opportunities for residents to engage with their health. A quick screening can identify concerning health indicators such as elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels — issues that may go unnoticed if screenings are not accessible.

By aiming to reduce barriers to preventive healthcare, AZ Blue Health Choice demonstrates a strong commitment to bolstering community health. They continue to invest in Arizona's community health workforce, ensuring that training and resources remain available to these vital workers. With the right tools and knowledge, community health workers are better positioned to assist Arizonans in identifying health risks sooner and facilitating early connections to care, ultimately transforming individual health outcomes and community well-being.

Through initiatives like this, Arizona is taking significant steps toward ensuring that all residents, regardless of their healthcare access history, can receive the preventive care they need. Ensuring that people are aware of their health status and can tackle concerns early on can make a considerable difference in the state’s overall health landscape, reflecting a dedicated effort towards a healthier Arizona for everyone.
