This summer, the National Archives of Japan is set to become a vibrant hub of cultural and educational experiences. Under the initiative titled "Experience the Excitement of Summer Events at the National Archives!", various activities await visitors from July 17 to September 23, including special exhibitions, nighttime gallery talks, and unique experiences aimed at families and students.
1. Enjoy a Summer Trip at the National Archives
Special Exhibition: Travelers to the East - The Enchanting Japan’s Eastern Literature
From July 17 to September 23, visitors can immerse themselves in a special exhibition focusing on travel, reminiscent of the summer holidays. This exhibition will showcase how the people of the capital viewed Eastern Japan as a mysterious land from ancient times to the Edo period. It's an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of travelers like Ariwara no Narihira, Saigyo, and Matsuo Basho, as their poems, stories, and travel accounts bring the past to life.

On select evenings, the Archives will extend its opening hours until 8 PM, offering gallery talks at 6:30 PM on specific dates. Visitors can enjoy the exhibitions at their leisure after work. The dates include:

2. Touch History: Experience the End of WWII
Special Display: The Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War
Date: August 6 - August 20
On August 15, 1945, an imperial proclamation announcing the end of the war was broadcasted. For a limited time this summer, the National Archives will exhibit the original text of the imperial rescript, providing a unique and poignant insight into this crucial moment in history.
