Okayama University's Diversity Initiative Symposium 2026



The esteemed Okayama University will host an online symposium titled “Diversity Research Environment Initiative (Leadership Development) Symposium – Supporting the Career Development of Female Faculty at Okayama University: Current State and Future Prospects” on May 15, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. This event aims to discuss the outcomes and challenges faced over the past three years of the initiative aimed at nurturing female leaders in academia.

Objectives of the Symposium



The symposium will focus on reviewing the achievements and hurdles encountered since the start of the Diversity Research Environment Initiative, as well as evaluating the future direction of the WTT (Woman Tenure Track) initiative, which has been in operation for over 15 years. Participants will gain insights into how these initiatives can pave the way for enhanced female representation and advancement in university faculties.

The program promises to feature a variety of discussions and speeches from key individuals involved in these initiatives:

1. Opening Remarks by President Yoshitomo Nasu, Okayama University.
2. Guest Address by Keiko Aihara, Director of Human Resource Policy Promotion Office, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
3. Keynote Speech: “Cultivating Female Research Leaders as an Organizational Strategy” by Yasuko Yamamura, Former Program Director, Japan Science and Technology Agency.
4. Interim Report on the Diversity Research Environment Initiative by Mayuri Inoue, Head of Gender Equality Office at Okayama University.
5. Reports from participants dispatched overseas and researchers supported by research grants.
6. Discussion on the 15-year history and future outlook of the WTT initiative.
7. A Panel Discussion on “Revitalizing Universities through Women’s Appointment,” facilitated by Yuko Kataoka, Associate Professor at Okayama University.
8. Closing Remarks by Yukari Mimura, Executive Director for Planning, Evaluation, and General Affairs.

The symposium invites Okayama University faculty, students, personnel from other institutions, and anyone else with an interest in women’s career development and diversity in academia.
