Shibuya Park Opens in Miraflores: A New Symbol of Friendship

Opening of Shibuya Park in Miraflores

On August 4, 2023, Shibuya Ward Mayor, Ken Hasebe, attended a ceremony for the opening of Shibuya Park in Peru's Lima Miraflores district. This park has been established as a symbol of friendship and cooperation following the sister city agreement signed in June 2021. The highlight of the park is a statue inspired by Hachiko, the famously loyal dog known for waiting for his owner at Shibuya Station.

During the ceremony, Mayor Hasebe expressed his gratitude to the Miraflores officials and community members, emphasizing the importance of Hachiko’s story, which resonates with many across Japan. He mentioned that "This statue of Hachiko is a cherished tribute that I hope will strengthen the bond between Shibuya and Miraflores as it captures the hearts of many."

The park features a statue of Hachiko alongside a commemorative plaque inscribed with the names of both areas — Shibuya and Miraflores — presented in Japanese. This addition not only celebrates their cultural ties but also aims to attract tourists, especially those from Japan, who may already recognize Hachiko from various films and media.

Park Features and Expectations

Shibuya Park is located within the Malecón de la Marina, a popular waterfront area in Miraflores. Local officials, including Miraflores Mayor Carlos Fernando Canales Anchorena, highlighted the potential for this park to increase tourism from Japan. He remarked, "We expect the opening of this park to not only attract more visitors from Japan but also foster business exchanges between our nations."

As both cities continue to bolster their sister city relationship, Shibuya Ward is also making plans to enhance the Chihara Children’s Park to incorporate elements inspired by Miraflores. This represents a reciprocal exchange of culture through various channels such as arts, education, tourism, sports, and innovative technologies. Both cities envision a future where collaboration and mutual understanding can grow through these initiatives.

The opening of Shibuya Park also highlights the growing interest in international community engagement, showcasing how shared values can create strong bonds between distant regions.

Looking Ahead

With the ongoing development of these parks, there arise numerous opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration. Events, educational programs, and joint community initiatives could flourish, providing a framework for learning and appreciation of each other's heritage and traditions. Furthermore, the establishment of platforms for science and innovation is anticipated, solidifying the friendship between Shibuya and Miraflores for the generations to come.

In conclusion, Shibuya Park signifies more than just a recreational space; it embodies the friendship between two unique cultures. As both cities continue to work together, the potential for growth and cooperation appears infinite, ensuring a promising relationship in the years ahead.
