Brillia Short Short Theatre Online Presents Cannes Film Festival Features!
This May, Brillia Short Short Theatre Online (BSSTO), operated by Visual Voice, is all set to exhilarate short film enthusiasts with its special Cannes Film Festival showcase. As part of the ongoing SSFF & ASIA 2025, BSSTO will roll out a series of captivating films over four weeks, starting with an exceptional lineup from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
The first highlight of this series is
The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, a gripping narrative that takes place in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993. The film revolves around a passenger train from Belgrade that is stopped by armed men, creating a tense atmosphere as innocent civilians are dragged out one by one. However, among the 500 passengers aboard, one man dares to rise against the relentless brutality. This film, directed by Nebojša Slijepčević, won the Palm d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Festival and will be available for viewing starting May 7.
Following this riveting story,
The Last Ferry From Grass Island, which won the Semaine de la Critique award in 2020, will premiere on May 14. Directed by Linhan Zhang, this film presents a surreal tale of a retired hitman and his elderly mother residing on a beautiful island. The plot takes an unexpected turn when his former “disciple” arrives on a ferry to complete what seems to be an unresolved mission, leading to poignant and thought-provoking moments.
On May 21, viewers can look forward to
Tea, directed by Blake Winston Rice, which was nominated in 2024 at Cannes. The film follows a lonely, allergy-prone man working in an electronics store as he rehearses for a date with his crush. However, during this awkward rehearsal, he receives a surprise attack from a hornet, resulting in a twist of fate that examines the complexities of attraction and vulnerability.
Concluding the Cannes special on May 28,
SIDERAL will bring audiences to the depths of Brazil's ambitious space exploration. Directed by Carlos Segundo, this film has also received a nomination at the 2021 Cannes Festival. It tells the story of a husband, a technician, and his wife, a cleaner, as they dream of a life beyond their current struggles, aiming to launch the first crewed rocket into space—striking a balance between hope and the harsh realities of life.
This exciting series is a part of the SSFF & ASIA 2025 online satellite venue and poses as an opportunity for cinephiles in Japan to experience these award-winning films for the very first time. Each film will be released weekly, promising insights into human strength, resilience, and the beauty found in the day-to-day lives of characters navigating their conflicts.
