On October 23, 2023, Prime Minister Sanae Takai met with the families of abduction victims at the Prime Minister's official residence, emphasizing the urgency and importance of addressing the abduction issue. In his opening remarks, he acknowledged the long-standing pain endured by the families and expressed his gratitude for their relentless commitment to resolving this critical national issue.
Takai stated, “This matter represents an infringement on national sovereignty and, as everyone here knows, it concerns the very essence of human life.” He recognized that it has been 23 years since five abductees returned to Japan in 2002, and yet none of the remaining victims have been brought home since then. The ongoing situation is a deep source of distress for the families, who continue to live in the hope of reunification with their loved ones.
As he reflected on the heart-wrenching circumstances faced by the families, Takai expressed a strong sense of urgency, saying, *“I feel the weight of your experiences pressing upon me, and I am committed to resolving these issues swiftly.
