Celebrating One Year of Shinigami Cold Noodle
Tokyo Cold Noodle, a specialized cold noodle restaurant located in Akihabara, has officially expanded the spice levels of its infamous "Shinigami Cold Noodle" to five levels, increasing options for those brave enough to face this fiery culinary adventure. Launched on August 18, 2025, this uniquely spicy dish is priced between 1,200 and 1,300 yen and quickly became a customer favorite, especially among spice enthusiasts.
The Evolution of Spice
Previously, diners could choose from three spice levels:
1 - Hell Gate (地獄門前),
2 - Hell (地獄), and
3 - The Underworld (黄泉の世界), which already showcased a fierce level of heat. However, as demand for spicier options grew, the restaurant created two more levels of intensity:
4 - Resurrection from the Underworld (黄泉がえり) and the ultimate challenge,
5 - The Night of the Last Day of the Holiday (連休最終日の夜). This new tier promises a scorching experience that pushes boundaries beyond the established extreme.
Flavor Meets Fire
For the newly introduced levels, the Shinigami Cold Noodle blends not only the fiery
Carolina Reaper but also incorporates
Bhut Jolokia, enhancing both the heat and the flavor profile. This approach ensures that amid the intense spiciness, the essential deliciousness of the dish remains intact.
Cold noodles are typically celebrated for their refreshing tang and rich broth, and Tokyo Cold Noodle is committed to preserving these qualities even at the higher levels of spice.
The Five Spice Levels:
- - Hell Gate (1 spice)
- - Hell (2 spices)
- - The Underworld (3 spices)
- - Resurrection from the Underworld (4 spices)
- - The Night of the Last Day of the Holiday (5 spices)
This ultimate level, aptly named, is where many can relate to the sheer level of heat they experience during the holidays, making it a memorable culinary challenge.
The Certificate of Resurrection
For those who bravely tackle the 5-spice level and finish the bowl, a special recognition awaits—the
"Certificate of Resurrection" (黄泉生還証). This certificate offers a lifetime of complimentary access to the spicier offerings exceeding the third level (3-5 spice). Notably, some daring diners already achieved the feat before the official launch of this certificate!

Background of Development
Shinigami Cold Noodle emerged from a demand for a more thrilling cold noodle dish. After its first year on the menu, customers who conquered the highest spice level expressed interest in even more challenges. With this feedback, Tokyo Cold Noodle carefully crafted an experience that didn't just chase numeric heat levels but balanced it with the essence of what makes cold noodles unique. The noodles are shipped directly from Morioka, and the chefs are cautious to maintain the refreshing and flavorful character of the dish.
Caution: Extreme Spiciness
The Shinigami Cold Noodle is extraordinarily spicy. Customers who are sensitive to heat are advised to reconsider ordering this dish. Individual experiences of spice may vary, and customers in questionable health or minors are advised against challenging themselves with extreme heat. Exercise caution while consuming to avoid choking or irritation from the spiciness.
