NABJ Initiates Search for New Executive Director Amid Changing Media Landscape

NABJ Launches Search for New Executive Director

On June 30, 2026, the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) announced a pivotal moment in the organization’s history—the start of the search for its next Executive Director. Recognizing the complexities and challenges faced by Black journalists today, NABJ is approaching this selection process with intent and care. The process will be spearheaded by an Executive Search Committee made up of seasoned professionals with extensive backgrounds in journalism and media leadership.

Request for Proposals

To facilitate this search, NABJ will issue a request for proposals (RFP) seeking an executive search firm. This RFP marks the beginning of a thorough and detailed search process aimed at finding a leader who embodies the mission and values of NABJ. The deadline for submissions will be July 21, 2026.

Importance of the Search

Errin Haines, NABJ President, emphasized the significance of this leadership decision, stating, "This search is one of the most important leadership decisions facing the organization as it continues to navigate a consequential period for both Black journalism and NABJ itself." The evolving media landscape, characterized by rapid changes, necessitates a leader with a strategic vision and the ability to adapt to new challenges while promoting equity and excellence in journalism.

Searching for a Leader

The next Executive Director will be expected to provide strong operational leadership, engage with membership, plan conventions, advocate for essential issues, and support long-term institutional growth. "We are focused on identifying an Executive Director who can provide strong operational leadership and a dynamic partnership with the board as we continue to strengthen NABJ for the future," Haines added.

The committee's composition underscores the seriousness with which NABJ is undertaking this task. The team consists of media executives and journalism leaders including Raelyn Johnson, LaSharah Bunting, Monica Richardson, Virgil Smith, and Mizell Stewart III. Each member brings a wealth of experience that will be instrumental in evaluating candidates and recommending finalists.

Commitment to the Process

Raelyn Johnson expressed her honor in chairing the committee and mentioned that this role is crucial in upholding the values of journalism. "At a time when protecting and upholding the First Amendment is more important than ever, I'm proud to support NABJ and its deep commitment to the essential role journalism plays in our democracy," she remarked.

"Nate has been capably leading NABJ during this interim period, and I'm grateful for the stability, professionalism, and sound stewardship he has brought to the organization," Haines concluded. NABJ will continue to share updates with its members as this important process unfolds.
