LIG Defense and Rheinmetall Forge Strategic Partnership to Enhance NATO Air Defense Systems

LIG Defense and Rheinmetall Unite for NATO Security

In a significant move aimed at bolstering air defense systems for NATO and European nations, LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A), a leading South Korean defense technology company, has announced a strategic partnership with Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Group. This collaboration was formalized during the Eurosatory defense exhibition held in France on June 16, 2026. With increasing geopolitical tensions and conflicts highlighting the importance of robust defense systems, both companies aim to address the growing demand for modern air defense capabilities.

Strategic Objectives

The partnership focuses on creating a joint venture where Rheinmetall will hold a majority stake. The immediate goal is to localize, further develop, and market LIG DA’s medium and long-range air defense systems in Europe, integrating them with Rheinmetall's short-range systems. This comprehensive approach aims to fill existing gaps in air defense and deliver solutions that can cover all layers of aerial threats.

LIG D&A President Ickhyun Shin emphasized the necessity of this collaboration by stating, “The time is right to deepen our cooperation with a trusted European partner like Rheinmetall to build a long-term strategic partnership in Europe. We will provide highly competitive and interoperable solutions that contribute to enhancing Europe’s integrated defense capabilities.”

New Developments and Innovations

In addition to distributing existing products, LIG D&A and Rheinmetall will jointly develop new missiles and capabilities for short-range air defense (SHORAD). This effort will not only expand their individual product portfolios but also enable them to provide comprehensive, turnkey solutions to their clients. By leveraging their collective expertise, they aim to enhance multi-layered air defense systems, rocket technology, and ammunition that can operate seamlessly in various combat scenarios.

Rheinmetall's Air Defense CEO, Oliver Dürr, remarked, “LIG D&A and Rheinmetall are collectively offering a highly complementary portfolio of ground-based air defense systems designed to meet current market needs and future challenges.”

Market Impact and Future Prospects

The recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have underlined the necessity for reliable and efficient supply chains in maintaining modern defense capabilities. Both companies bring extensive knowledge and capabilities to this strategic partnership, which is crucial for fulfilling the rising demand for multi-layered air defense systems. The collaboration also aims to utilize existing supply chains effectively, ensuring that the systems are delivered promptly and efficiently.
