Introduction
In response to the increasing issue of school absenteeism, Meiko Mirai, a subsidiary of Meiko Network Japan, has announced the opening of the Meiko Free School in South Asagaya. Scheduled to open in November 2025, this school aims to provide a supportive and adaptable learning environment for children who face challenges in traditional school settings.
The Rise of School Absenteeism
Recent statistics from Japan's Ministry of Education highlight an alarming rise in the number of children and students who are unable to attend school, with annual figures reaching record highs. The reasons behind this trend are varied, including academic pressure, social dynamics, and health concerns. This rising dilemma necessitates alternative educational models that cater to struggling students, promoting an inclusive approach to learning.
Background of Meiko Mirai's Initiative
Kazuki Obata, the CEO of Meiko Mirai, is no stranger to the challenges of school absenteeism. Having experienced long-term absence from traditional schooling himself, he understands the importance of creating spaces where children can feel safe and supported. By leveraging existing Meiko Juku facilities, the Free School aims to establish accessible learning environments nationwide, with the Asagaya location being the inaugural site.
Proposed Location and Accessibility
The Meiko Free School South Asagaya New Koenji Campus will be conveniently located:
- - Address: 1-1-4 Minami-Asagaya, Suginami-ku, Tokyo 166-0004
- - Accessibility: Just a 7-minute walk from both Minami-Asagaya Station via the Marunouchi Line and Shin-Koenji Station. It is also easily accessible via bus from the Nisibashi stop.
Educational Philosophy
The core mission of the Meiko Free School is to identify and nurture each child's unique potential by fostering their personal motto, “You can do it if you try.” The school believes in supporting children to discover their capabilities and encouraging them towards independence in their learning journey.
Unique Learning Approach
At the Meiko Free School, the learning framework allows students to choose their educational activities based on their mood and readiness. Each day starts with a strategy session followed by reflective times at the end of the day, ensuring a continuous build-up of their small successes. Students can opt for traditional classes or explore new interests, enabling them to progress at their own pace without overwhelming pressure.
