Open Society Foundations Initiates Earthquake Recovery Effort in Colombia

In response to the catastrophic earthquake that struck Colombia, Open Society Foundations has pledged a generous $1.5 million aimed at facilitating an equitable recovery process. The funding focuses on the Pacific region, an area already grappling with issues of poverty and discrimination prior to the disaster.

The Impact of the Earthquake

The recent earthquake has reportedly claimed the lives of over 300 individuals, and left hundreds missing while thousands have sustained injuries. Most tragically, this natural disaster has resulted in the destruction of more than 30,000 homes. A Localized Approach to Recovery

Binaifer Nowrojee, President of Open Society, emphasized the foundation's commitment to strengthening local leaders and ensuring that those most affected by the disaster play a leading role in the recovery efforts. “The people most affected by this disaster should be leaders in the recovery, not simply recipients of aid,” she stated. With this initiative, Open Society aims to empower local communities to take charge of their recovery, allowing them to define their priorities and needs.

This funding is designed to enhance the capabilities of local authorities, specifically in Buenaventura and Chocó, enabling them to distribute resources effectively and improve disaster response mechanisms. By prioritizing local community organizations, the initiative seeks to sustain their efforts during the recovery and equip them with greater influence in the long term.

Pedro Abramovay, Vice President of Programs at Open Society Foundations, pointed out the long-standing structural issues facing Colombia’s Pacific region. “For decades, Colombia's Pacific region has faced marginalization and structural racism. These challenges did not begin with the earthquake and will not end when the emergency passes,” he remarked. Abramovay highlighted the earthquake recovery initiative as an opportunity not only to provide immediate relief but also to restore dignity and expand opportunities for the affected communities.

This initiative by Open Society is part of a broader effort to support Colombia's recovery, which includes contributions from the national government, local authorities, civil society groups, and private sector entities.
