Black Restaurant Week: A Decade of Celebrating Culinary Excellence in Atlanta

Black Restaurant Week: A Celebration of Culinary Diversity in Atlanta

This year, Atlanta gears up for a vibrant and essential celebration of Black culinary talent as it welcomes back Black Restaurant Week from August 3 to August 17. This event not only recognizes the flavors and talents of Black chefs and restaurateurs but also advocates for equity within the culinary industry.

Established in 2016 by Warren Luckett and managed by Falayn Ferrell and Derek Robinson, Black Restaurant Week initially set out to enhance the visibility of Black culinary professionals who often struggle with marketing their skills in a predominantly competitive environment. From its inception, the campaign has provided a robust platform to spotlight over 5,000 chefs, caterers, food trucks, and restaurant owners across the nation. This year marks a significant milestone, as the event celebrates its ninth year in Atlanta with the backing of several local organizations, including the Airport District Convention & Visitors Bureau and the City of South Fulton.

Through dedicated community engagement and marketing support, Black Restaurant Week aims to elevate the visibility of Black-owned businesses, contributing to an estimated $75 million in economic impact for Atlanta—a reflection of the local sales and job support driven by their participation. Featured businesses this year include popular spots like T's Brunch Bar, J'ouvert Caribbean Kitchen & Bar, Rays Southern Foods, Zubi's Taco Kitchen, Whisk Breakfast & Brunch, and Grand Slam Pizza of Kennesaw.

Despite the joyous celebration, the realities faced by restaurateurs are challenging. The National Restaurant Association's 2024 Industry Report highlights pressing issues such as soaring food and labor costs that significantly burden restaurant operators. In tandem with a decline in corporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Black-owned culinary establishments frequently encounter systemic barriers that hinder economic sustainability.

Amid these challenges, Black Restaurant Week has introduced an exciting new component— the Bites & Birdies Golf Tournament. Partnering with Stella Artois, the tournament scheduled for August 9, represents a fusion of culinary excellence, networking, and philanthropy. Participants can join as golfers or supporters, contributing to a noble cause that raises funds for students from underrepresented backgrounds who aspire to careers in hospitality, culinary, and business fields. To date, the Feed the Soul Foundation has awarded $85,000 in scholarships to students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic-Serving Institutions across the country.

Warren Luckett, the founder of Black Restaurant Week, emphasized the commitment to their mission: “Our work is rooted in gratitude but driven by urgency. We’re not just celebrating food; we’re advocating for equity, visibility, and longevity.” This heart-felt call to action resonates through the community, underscoring the importance of collective support and the necessity for continued advocacy within the industry.

In addition to the golf tournament, the two-week festivities feature an array of events, including a dinner and skate night in collaboration with Marquis Restaurant Lounge and Cascade Skating Rink, as well as specially curated dinners and happy hours across the city. A complete schedule of events can be found on blackrestaurantweeks.com.

As Black Restaurant Week continues to elevate and celebrate the richness of African American, African, and Caribbean cuisines, it serves as a reminder of the untapped potential and vibrant narrative embedded in Atlanta’s culinary scene. With every bite, not only do attendees enjoy exquisite meals but they also contribute to a movement that champions economic growth and cultural appreciation across the nation. Join in this celebration and support Black-owned culinary businesses during this significant event that promises to leave a lasting impact on the local community and beyond.
