Oisix and Fukuyama City Partner for Marine Restoration
On November 6, 2025, Oisix La Daichi Inc., based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, signed an individual cooperation agreement with Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, aimed at improving marine environments. This collaboration seeks to tackle the challenges posed by the invasive Aigo fish, which has proliferated due to rising sea temperatures caused by global warming, negatively affecting marine ecosystems and local fisheries.
The Background of the Agreement
Fukuyama City is renowned for its aquaculture, particularly of nori seaweed. However, the recent surge in Aigo populations has raised alarm bells as these fish consume vast amounts of seaweed, leading to a phenomenon known as "Isonoke," which devastates marine plant life and impacts local fishing activities. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Oisix decided to leverage its sustainable retail practices in conjunction with Fukuyama City's efforts. The aim is to transform Aigo into a marketable product, thus contributing to a stable income for local fishers and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
Key Objectives of the Collaboration
Effective Utilization of Aigo
Despite being considered a delicacy in some regions, Aigo has struggled to find its way into mainstream markets due to its strong odor and required meticulous cleaning processes. Under the new agreement, the local Tajima Fishing Cooperative will handle the initial processing of the Aigo, removing its innards and eliminating any fishy smell. Oisix plans to buy the processed Aigo and use its product development expertise to create a range of dishes, including meal kits that feature Aigo as an ingredient. This approach aims not only to introduce Aigo into the customers' dining experiences but also to establish a new culinary trend.
Stabilizing Fishermen's Income
By actively managing the Aigo catch, this partnership aims to restore the marine environments affected by excessive fish consumption. Lowering Aigo populations is expected to facilitate the regeneration of underwater ecosystems, leading to improved fishing yields of other species, thereby providing a much-needed boost to local fishers' incomes.
Ongoing Discussions for Marine Restoration
This collaboration will also promote ongoing discussions regarding marine ecosystem restoration, paving the way for a sustainable fishing model.
Launch of New Product Using Aigo
As part of these initiatives, Oisix will introduce a new product featuring Aigo, called "Aigo Confit Infused with Herb Oil," which will be available for purchase from November 6, 2025. The product will showcase the high-quality processing of Aigo by local fisheries, and it will be easy to prepare at home: customers can thaw it and serve directly or pair it with their favorite vegetables for a delightful meal.
