Hansa Biopharma Secures €115 Million Licensing Deal with SERB for Idefirix in Key Markets

On July 1, 2026, Hansa Biopharma AB, a pioneering biopharmaceutical company based in Lund, Sweden, announced the successful closing of a significant licensing agreement with SERB S.A., a global pharmaceutical company focused on rare diseases. This transaction, valued at €115 million, aims to enhance the commercialization of Idefirix in the European Union (EU), United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Under the terms of the deal, SERB will acquire the exclusive rights to develop and market Idefirix, which is targeted at improving transplantation outcomes for patients with a high degree of sensitization.

Idefirix is a first-in-class treatment designed to rapidly remove immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies, which can complicate organ transplants for highly sensitized individuals. The therapy has shown promising results in addressing the unmet medical needs of kidney transplant recipients who might otherwise be unable to undergo procedures due to incompatible antibodies. As noted by Hansa's CEO, Renée Aguiar-Lucander, this partnership is crucial for providing expertise and resources that will improve access for patients in these regions.

The deal comprises an upfront payment of €110 million, supplemented by an additional €5 million contingent on the acceptance of Idefirix's filing for full approval by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Idefirix has been conditionally approved by the European Commission for use in adult kidney transplant patients who test positive for a crossmatch against a deceased donor. This transaction not only fortifies Hansa's financial standing but also positions the company favorably for a potential launch of its drug, imlifidase, in the U.S. market, pending regulatory approvals.

In addition to the primary agreement, SERB is set to oversee the long-term follow-up of patients post-authorization and continue pediatric studies already in progress. With over 25 years of experience in handling rare medical conditions and an impressive portfolio of more than 70 products across various countries, SERB's role as Hansa's partner is expected to provide the strategically necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the pharmaceutical landscape effectively.

Hansa Biopharma’s proprietary technology platform focuses on immunomodulatory therapies for organ transplantation, gene therapy, and autoimmune diseases. Their pipeline includes several innovative products aimed at tackling significant challenges in patient care. With Idefirix emerging as a cornerstone of Hansa's offerings, the company is poised to make remarkable contributions to the field of transplantation, particularly for patients who have faced barriers to receiving necessary organ transplants.

This successful closure of the licensing agreement marks not just a financial triumph for Hansa, but a pivotal advancement in the quest to deliver effective solutions for individuals suffering from severe immunological challenges in organ transplantation. Hansa Biopharma, continued by its commitment to research and development, looks ahead to enhancing its capabilities, ultimately transforming the landscape of transplantation medicine. As we await further news on the FDA's upcoming evaluations and decisions on imlifidase, the landscape of kidney transplantation may indeed witness a transformative shift, offering hope to countless patients worldwide.
