Join the Global Movement: Wings for Life World Run 2026 Unites Athletes for Spinal Injury Research

Wings for Life World Run 2026: A Global Charity Event

The Wings for Life World Run 2026 is set to kick off on May 10 at 20:00 JST, as Red Bull Japan proudly supports this monumental global running event organized by the Wings for Life Foundation. This unique race aims to raise funds for spinal injury research and is the world’s largest simultaneous running event.

All registration fees will directly fund research efforts targeting cures for spinal injuries—a cause crucial to many around the world. The event features various prominent athletes, including Red Bull athletes such as Ryusei Yamada and Daisho Ogihara from snowboarding, skateboarders Sakura Shiota and Miku Oda, BMX rider Kiki Hayakawa, freestyler Yu-ri, among others participating in the Tokyo app run venue.

In addition, Japan’s official ambassadors include idol Tomoka Igari, who actively participates in wheelchair activities, popular wheelchair YouTuber Mako Shibuya, and former professional baseball player and commentator Norihiro Akahoshi, who all share personal connections to spinal injuries. Moreover, the Aoyama Gakuin University long-distance running team, celebrated for their three consecutive wins at the Hakone Ekiden, will also take part, highlighting the event’s importance within Japan’s sports community.

What Makes Wings for Life World Run Unique?

Unlike standard running events, the Wings for Life World Run has no defined finish line. Participants begin the race simultaneously, and after 30 minutes, a “catcher car” will start from the starting point and pursue the runners. Once a participant is overtaken by the catcher car, their race experience concludes, creating a thrilling and competitive atmosphere.

The event consists of three formats: the flagship run with the physical catcher car, the app run where participants can follow their own course using the app, and collective app run events where app users gather to run together with others. In the app run, a virtual catcher car chases the runners, adding to the excitement.

Since its inception in 2014, the Wings for Life World Run has seen participation from over 1.87 million individuals across 191 countries and regions, collectively raising over €60.53 million (approximately ¥9.9 billion) in research funds. In 2025 alone, the race welcomed 310,719 participants from 170 countries, with Japan contributing 3,676 participants (700 from Tokyo), amassing an impressive total of €8.6 million (about ¥1.4 billion) for spinal injury research.

Running together not only doubles the excitement of training and the event day but also fosters mutual encouragement among participants as they all strive towards their individual goals. This sense of connection to runners from around the world amplifies the experience, making it a meaningful occasion to join.
