Virginia Governor's Cup® 2026 Awards Celebrate Unprecedented Excellence in Local Wines

Celebrating Excellence at the Virginia Governor's Cup® 2026

The Virginia Governor's Cup® Competitition marks a milestone in 2026, having received an astonishing 677 entries from 156 producers throughout the Commonwealth. This year's competition not only stood out for its participation but also for its rigor and prestige, showcasing the best of Virginia's wine, cider, and mead production.

A Record-Breaking Year

The 44th annual Governor's Cup® Competition has become one of the country's most challenging wine competitions. The sheer number of submissions this year illustrates the growing enthusiasm and talent within Virginia's wine industry. This impressive quantity led to 224 gold medals awarded to 113 producers after a demanding blind tasting conducted by nationally recognized wine professionals.

Organized by the Virginia Wineries Association, in collaboration with the Virginia Wine Board and the Virginia Vineyards Association, the competition only allows wines and ciders crafted from 100% Virginia-grown fruit. Every entry underwent thorough evaluation through a multi-round blind tasting process, ensuring that only the highest quality wines earned their gold medals. The scoring system utilized was a meticulous 100-point scale, with submissions needing a score of 90 points or above to secure gold.

Frank Morgan, the Director of Judging for the third consecutive year, noted the exceptional quality and quantity of this year's submissions. He celebrated the diversity of talent represented, which included numerous experienced volunteers and accomplished judges spanning the wine industry.

“The 2026 competition represents a landmark year, seeing an increase in both participating wineries and the number of awarded gold medals,” said Morgan. “The range of quality reflects the vibrancy and innovative spirit of Virginia's winemaking.”
