Uzbekistan Welcomes Its First-Ever Digital Substation with Completion of the Zafarabad 220kV Project

Pioneering Power Digitalization in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan has taken a monumental step towards modernizing its energy infrastructure with the successful completion of the Zafarabad 220kV Digital Substation, built by Shanghai Electric (SEHK: 2727, SSE: 601727). This groundbreaking facility, the first of its kind in the country, officially launched in Jizzakh Province, represents a significant leap in enhancing power supply capabilities in eastern Uzbekistan.

Addressing Energy Challenges

For over twenty years, Uzbekistan has faced persistent shortages in natural gas and electricity, leading residents to rely on less efficient heating alternatives during harsh winter conditions. The Zafarabad Digital Substation is set to remedy this by significantly bolstering the region's electrical grid. With an impressive capacity of 400 megawatts, this new facility is poised to effectively double the electrical output for the Jizzakh area, stabilizing power supply for local industries and neighborhoods.

Innovative Design Features

This state-of-the-art substation spans approximately 75,000 square meters and includes two 250 MVA auto-transformers manufactured by Shanghai Electric. These transformers will lower the voltage from the higher power grid level of 220kV to 110kV, ensuring high-quality electric supply to the rapidly developing Jizzakh province. The advanced technology incorporated into this substation is a game changer in the region, providing a reliable source of energy to meet the ever-increasing demand.

Fully Digitalized Operations

One of the most striking aspects of the Zafarabad project is its fully digitalized operational system. This innovation is expected to enhance both efficiency and safety throughout the substation's operations. Equipped with cutting-edge monitoring and data acquisition systems, the substation minimizes the requirement for on-site maintenance staff while simultaneously improving safety protocols. In emergency situations, real-time monitoring will enable quick identification of faults and facilitate rapid adjustments to power loads. This proactive approach is instrumental in preventing service disruptions and ensuring a continuous power supply.

Project Management Excellence

The turnkey project was awarded to Shanghai Electric by Uzbekistan's National Electric Grid in October 2021. Throughout the process, the project team faced and overcame various challenges, including coordinating efforts between multiple stakeholders, language barriers among the crew, and technical troubleshooting. The team not only optimized the configurations for the project but also conducted comprehensive training sessions for local personnel.

By uniting Chinese and Uzbek teams, Shanghai Electric successfully completed the main infrastructure on time, while achieving a commendable safety record of three years without any incidents. This collaboration showcases the potential for cross-border teamwork in advancing global infrastructure.

Looking Ahead

As Uzbekistan continues its journey toward energy modernization, the Zafarabad 220kV Digital Substation serves as a beacon of technological advancement. It is expected to significantly improve energy distribution throughout the region, empowering both industries and residents while fostering sustainable growth.

Given the rising demand for reliable power supply, the completion of this digital substation marks a pivotal moment in Uzbekistan's energy future. For further insights into this groundbreaking project, visit Shanghai Electric's official website.
