Texas Southern University Triumphs at International Forensics Championship

The Texas Southern University (TSU) Debate Team has etched its name into the history books once again by clinching the esteemed title at the 35th Annual International Forensics Association (IFA) Speech and Debate Tournament, which took place from March 7-9 in scenic Incheon, South Korea. This remarkable achievement comes as a result of the team’s dedicated work and relentless pursuit of excellence in the art of debate.

Head coach Dr. Gloria Batiste-Roberts expressed immense pride in her team's accomplishments. She remarked, "Our team has worked tirelessly honing their skills as debaters while representing Texas Southern on the grandest of stages. This championship reflects the dedication we see daily. I could not be prouder of this accomplishment for this group of scholars, and for our university. It is a true embodiment of excellence in achievement."

Participating teams included 27 institutions from across the globe, with competitors from notable universities such as Vanderbilt University, Southern Methodist University, and Bradley University. TSU not only brought home the first-place sweepstakes award as the overall champion but also amassed an impressive 21 individual awards, showcasing their prowess in various categories including Poetry, Dramatic Interpretation, and Duo Dramatic Interpretation. The team also secured commendable fourth and fifth place positions in the top Parliamentary Debate Speakers Awards.

Team member Jaila Hampton reflected on their journey, stating, "When we competed in this competition in Ireland last year, the results weren’t what we prepared for, and it motivated us to work harder throughout the year to be ready for this moment. It was gratifying to compete at the level to which we knew we were capable. We are excited to bring another international championship back to Texas Southern."

This latest victory marks the TSU Debate Team’s fifth triumph at the IFA championship, their previous win being in 2018. Their foundation dates back to 1949 when Dr. Thomas F. Freeman established the team with a vision to provide students a platform for various forms of forensic arts. Under his guidance, the team flourished, and even today, the spirit of his legacy continues to inspire the members.

Dr. Batiste-Roberts noted, "We won first place in all four of the tournaments we'd been on, but to top it off with the championship was a wonderful and heartwarming experience for the students, and for me because I'm reminded always of our founder Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, who brought so much to the debate team as its founder and coach for over 70 years. He passed in 2020, but his spirit is still alive with us."

Adding to the team's achievements, seven assistant coaches accompanied them—each one an alumni of the Debate Team, further contributing to the team's legacy. Notably, during the tournament, Trendi Nguyen was elected to the IFA executive committee, where she will serve as the International Liaison, affirming the team’s leadership role in the forensics community.

As a comprehensive institution, Texas Southern University stands out for its commitment to urban programming and research, ensuring accessibility to higher education for underserved communities. Since its establishment in 1927, TSU has distinguished itself as a diverse and respected educational pillar in Texas, empowering its students to create positive changes within society.

This year, with their incredible performance in Incheon, the TSU Debate Team has not only brought another trophy back to the university but also raised the bar for future generations of debaters. Their unwavering spirit and commitment to excellence serve as an inspiration both on campus and in the broader academic community.
