Discover the Japan Phil Music Lab Workshop
The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, based in Suginami, Tokyo, is excited to announce the launch of its new workshop titled
Japan Phil Music Lab, scheduled for
March 16, 2026. This engaging initiative aims to provide participants with a unique opportunity to witness the creative process of music-making through the rehearsal of a string quartet, designed as a
hands-on experience.
The workshop, guided by violinist Shunichiro Sato from the Japan Phil, will delve into the fascinating world of chamber music. Unlike orchestral or solo performances, chamber music focuses on
communication and collaboration among musicians, which creates a different kind of musical dialogue. Participants will have the opportunity to observe the rehearsal up close, experiencing in real-time how musicians interpret and shape the music.
During the workshop, attendees will not only observe the musicians but also engage in discussions with them, encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artistic process. This program is not merely about
listening to music, but aims to inspire participants to
feel and think about the process of creativity in music.
The Japan Phil envisions the Music Lab as a new gateway for connecting the orchestra with its audience, letting people explore questions such as: What is music? How is a performance born? How do musicians think and express themselves? By engaging with these topics, the participants will enrich their future concert experiences and gain a deeper appreciation for orchestral music.
