Okayama University Vice President at NAFSA 2026
Atsufumi Yokoi, Vice President of Okayama University, recently represented the Japanese government at NAFSA 2026 held in Orlando, Florida, one of the largest international education conferences in the world. The event took place from May 26 to 29, 2026, and provided a platform for thought leaders in education to discuss significant trends and the future of higher education.
During the conference, Yokoi participated in two key sessions: the
Japan Session and the
Global Outlook Spotlight Panel. In the Japan Session, he joined other prominent speakers to discuss innovative educational models that incorporate artificial intelligence and multicultural co-learning. With the guidance of moderator Kaori Furuya from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the dialogue focused on overcoming barriers faced by Japanese students in English proficiency and participation in global learning environments.
One of the main themes of Yokoi's presentation was the urgency for educational institutions to rethink how international education is delivered. He proposed new learning environments designed to alleviate students' anxieties regarding language and participation, which often hinder their engagement in global education. By leveraging AI technologies, institutions can enhance inclusivity, ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds can take part in international learning opportunities.
In the subsequent Global Outlook Spotlight Panel, moderated by Ahmad Ezzedin, Vice President for International Affairs at the University of Washington and NAFSA’s president, Yokoi discussed pressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. He emphasized that these challenges pose not only scientific and political problems but also ethical dilemmas that require a reevaluation of our values and worldviews.
The panelists, including José Celso Freire, Vice President for International Affairs at São Paulo State University (UNESP), and Esther Benjamin, CEO of World Education Services, shared insights on how globalization and demographic shifts necessitate a redefinition of international higher education’s role. Discussions highlighted the importance of sustainable international partnerships and the need to clarify the value of global education in today’s world.
Yokoi argued for a broader interpretation of internationalization that goes beyond student mobility, stressing that fostering multicultural co-learning within educational environments is crucial. He underscored that achieving inclusivity in international education is essential for energizing mobility and creating learning experiences beneficial to all students, irrespective of their language skills or travel history.
Looking ahead, Okayama University is committed to elevating Japan's presence in international higher education through initiatives such as NAFSA and collaborations within global networks. The university aims to contribute to a sustainable society by enhancing its focus on multicultural education and meeting the evolving needs of students.
In summary, Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi’s participation at NAFSA 2026 not only spotlighted Okayama University’s innovative approaches to education but also reaffirmed the significance of adapting to global educational trends in the context of contemporary challenges. With a forward-looking vision of achieving sustainable futures through knowledge creation and preservation, Okayama University continues to strive as a prominent hub for research and learning on the global stage.
